With high hopes going into Cannes, Australia has bombed at the shortlist stage of the inaugural Cannes Creative Effectiveness Lions.
After a brutal cull by the jury, only 10 entries made it through worldwide, including Colenso BBDO, Auckland’s campaign for ‘The Pacific’ for TVNZ.

WTF?
Australian advertising’s end-of-term report? “Must work harder”
Still, good to see the everyone-gets-a-prize EFFIES revealed for the sham they are.
Sorry, but how can a jury at an effectiveness award be brutal?
Can they chuck out forms of effectiveness they don’t like?
Do some sales increases count more than others?
If the winner is at the mercy of the jury, as opposed to results, how is it different than any of the other Cannes awards? Other than as a way to get even more money off agencies?
The description of the Pacific campaign that you link to doesn’t inspire massive confidence in the numbers, but if we are supposed to take the Cannes Effie seriously a tad more transparency might be useful.
Only 10 creative and effective campaigns/ideas in the world? Get your hand off it.
Australia bombs out?

What they’re saying is that creativity doesn’t equal effectiveness, with so few shortlists.
This has back fired in all our faces. hundreds of lions given, thousands of finalist but only six piece out of all of them are deemed effective. This says one of two things. Either the jury was flying blind because they are the first ever and got it wrong, or there is no correlation between our client business needs and objectives and Cannes. I hope it is the first.
