News Digital Media lures Stuart Spiteri from Google Singapore for chief operating officer role
Stuart Spiteri has been appointed chief operating officer of News Digital Media, joining from Google’s Singapore office, where he was head of platforms across the Japan and Asia-Pacific region. He starts in his new role on December 5.
Reporting to the CEO of News Digital Media and the Australian Richard Freudenstein, Spiteri will be responsible for day to day strategic and operational management of News Digital Media.
In addition to leading the growth and direction of company’s portfolio of standalone businesses, which includes news.com.au, Getprice, True Local, moshtix, Foxtip, Learning Seat, The Punch and Newsource, Spiteri will work closely with News Limited’s divisional leadership teams to develop and grow News Limited’s newspaper and magazine websites, tablet applications and mobile sites.
He will also have oversight of the company’s investments in Our Deal and Sporting Pulse.
Says Freudenstein: “I am delighted that Stuart is joining us. He brings with him over a decade of experience at the highest levels of international digital management. His deep understanding of digital technology and commercial acumen will prove great assets to the company as it continues its rapid growth.”
Spiteri, who was born in Melbourne, said he was thrilled to be returning to Australia to join News Digital Media.
Says Spiteri: “News Digital Media has comfortably outgrown the market over the last five years and is now set to significantly scale its business through innovative advertising solutions, digital subscriptions and transactional revenue streams.
It is clear that News Digital Media is going to play a leading role in the Australian digital economy in the years to come, which is why I am so excited to be offered this role. I am thoroughly looking forward to working with Richard and his team.”
Spiteri has been with Google Singapore since 2010, leading the platform organisation across Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. Prior to this he spent seven years with Akamai Technologies as managing director of Asia-Pacific.
Spiteri’s earlier career included roles as head of the marketing solutions division of chinadotcom, where he built the region’s leading ad network (24/7 Media Asia), director of The Economist Group and group marketing manager of Starlite Holdings, which holds Asian licenses for Hallmark Cards and Warner Bros. across Asia-Pacific.
