This week on Gruen: Advergaming and The Pitch: JMK vs Loud on the benefits of a privatised ABC
THE GRUEN TRANSFER:
RINSE AND REPEAT
WED SEPTEMBER 14 9PM ON ABC1,
THURS SEPTEMBER 15 AT 9.30PM ON ABC2
Wil Anderson, Todd Sampson (Leo Burnett), Russel Howcroft (GPYR), Dee Madigan (Socket), along with new Gruen face, consumer psychologist and partner at Naked Communications, Adam Ferrier.
On Wednesday night’s show:
Shampoos. Australians spend a massive $440 million on shampoo and conditioner a year. Bad hair is big business. According to one report from the US, 25% of women having bad hair days consider not leaving home. Gruen has two key questions. Is the whole category based on dodgy “science”? And can Sunsilk’s Hair Superheroes save us all?
Advergaming. Corn chip company Doritos wanted to give its product some edge. So it came up with an idea specifically targeted at teenage males. Asylum 626 is a mashup of movie and online game. You log on via Facebook and Twitter. It uses your real life, harvesting photos of your Facebook friends and asking you to decide who gets to live. It this example of what they call advergaming perfect product engagement or a ploy to harvest personal information?
The Pitch: This week’s Pitch comes from Adelaide’s Dave Willanski. He asked for a campaign to privatise the ABC. This made Wil just a wee bit nervous! JMK vs Loud.

When are we going to get people with a decent opinion on advertising onto the panel? Sure Russ gives a balanced perspective but there seems to be a severe lack of great English creatives in place of US planners and Kiwi freelancers.
Annoys me that Australia thinks their view on advertising is what the industry strives for when it’s mostly bland regurgitation and cliched rubbish.
Yeah, well said.
And what’s the deal with ads in China being in Chinese all the time? Don’t brands realise there are many other languages out there? It’s time we get a well rounded approach to language in Chinese advertisements!
When are we going to get people with a decent opinion on advertising onto the CB blog? Sure we’ve got ad creatives, planner and suits and other people involved in the industry giving a balanced perspective but there seems to be a severe lack of comment from plumbers and call-centre team leaders. And what about the children?
Annoys me that people in the Australian ad industry think their views on Australian advertising are what other people in the Australian ad industry want to hear.
Exactly!
And what’s with how cheese dries out so fast in the fridge? Don’t cheese makers realise we don’t all have time to wrap up their precious products? It’s time for a new attitude to milk based products that require refrigeration!
For crying out loud get some real ad people on that show. Where are the Nobays, the Furbys, the Keoghs….at least they’d say something unfettered and interesting. Bunch of boring old yes people on that show. Give us something with balls. A bloody consumer expert….whatever next…someone from Neilsen. Or a lecturer from Billy Blue or that bloke Wally from advertising advantage…might as well?
