Simon Vicar’s Cannes Diary – Day Two from the Cannes Radio Lions jury room
Simon Vicars, senior creative at DDB, is New Zealand’s representative on the Radio jury. He has just finished day two of judging and writes exclusively for Campaign Brief. Other Aussie and Kiwi jurors will be contributing exclusively to the CB Blog over the next week, so make sure you check in daily, hourly, every minute…
There was a collective sigh of relief in our judging room today. We heard some good ads. Some categories stood out for all the right reasons, like Best use of Radio. More and more it appears that non traditional stuff is creeping into the radio format and I think everyone on the jury is cool with that.
As far as scams go I’ve been thoroughly let down. I haven’t heard one ad for a Karate school. Not one. The Karate industry must be in a bit of a slump. Hopefully the Print guys can share some of their scammy scams with us.
Winning at Cannes is a big deal and our job as jurors is to ensure that a Lion remains a highly coveted prize. Which is why giving someone metal for Best Acting Performance in a radio spot doesn’t sit well with me.
