Sam Cable: Hamburg school diary #7

HAMBURG DIARIES 7a.jpgSam Cable is a copywriting student at Miami Ad School Sydney, currently studying in Hamburg before graduating in December.

There are not many places in the world that have come straight from the pages of a storybook. A few weeks ago I published an article about my journey to København and the lands of the great Hans Christian Andersen. The Danish capital continues to celebrate its fairy tale roots, even featuring a bronze Little Mermaid statue alongside the Langelinie promenade.

This weekend I had the privilege to spend time revisiting another folklore legend, Brothers Grimm. Popularised for the stories of Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin, Brothers Grimm are written deeply into my childhood. When I arrived to Munich on the weekend, I was gobsmacked to see these tales come to life. The city is lined with cobblestone streets, and sheltered by the warm orange, gable-style roofs.  At the centre of Munich is the Marienplatz – a location, which I believed, crossed over in many of the Brothers Grimm stories.

HAMBURG DIARIES 7b.jpgComing back down to reality, this week I attended a presentation, led by Andreas Möllmann, Managing Director Strategy at Yours Truly. At the start of his discussion, Andreas mentioned he believed the ideal creative was a digital optimist: half artist, and half scientist. Delving along the scientific route, the presentation touched on Digital Darwinism, a notion by Brian Solis, which explained the necessity of brand adaptation to societal trends. Without adapting, the brand will never evolve and continue to drift further away from their consumer’s life. Andreas closed his presentation by discussing the value of an idea. He posed the question: ‘what solution does this idea make and will it add value to the client?’ If you cannot answer this about your idea, Andreas commented, then your idea might not be a solution.

Smooth cobblestone streets.
