Sam Cable: Hamburg school diary #4

Sam Cable is a copywriting student at Miami Ad School Sydney, currently studying in Hamburg before graduating in December.

Welcome to ‘portfolio crunchtime’. A phrase that means, ambitious students (typically in groups of twos and threes), ponder the state of the world accompanied by a laptop and chocolate.

In the search for inspiration, I took a sneaky journey to the iconic city of Berlin. Although the capital is no longer split into East and West Germany, the divide between contemporary and historical Berlin is uncannily beautiful. Scattered amongst the streets are relics of the old city: The Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, and pieces of the once towering, Berlin Wall. Contrasting vividly is modern Berlin, with dynamic architecture and a pulsing nightlife. This is the only place in the world I have experienced such a shift across scenery, culture and attitude.

To keep the inspiration following, last week we also had privilege to listen to a presentation about entrepreneurship. Jens Urbaniak, Founder, and Bijan Mashagh, Head of Operations, are the key leaders for SMS concierge service, GoButler. Launched in March 2015, GoBulter has grown at an incredible pace with offices in Berlin and New York. Jens and Bijan shared their personal start-up journey from kitchen table to high-rise office. Jens discussed the benefits of starting the day early, tackling the hardest job on the work list first, and having question-fuelled conversations instead of scheduled meetings.

My key takeaway from their presentation was the importance of thriving in one element and outsourcing additional skillsets needed to complete the task. Wise words from such young industry leaders.
