Sam Cable: Hamburg school diary #2

HAMBURG DIARIES port image copy (1).jpgSam Cable is a copywriting student at Miami Ad School Sydney, currently studying in Hamburg before graduating in December.

‘Das Tor zur Welt’ or in English, ‘The Gateway to the World’ is the common translation used to name the second busiest seaport in Europe. Located in Hamburg, the port’s trans-shipment centre welcomes approximately 145 million tons of cargo each year. The city is carved by snaking rivers, canals and lakes; a stunning sight to behold while walking through the cool autumn mornings.

Donned with gloves and a raincoat, cycling is the primary way I commute to Miami Ad School Europe for classes. This quarter I am joined by students from the four corners of the globe; all with a passion to craft ideas that will make an impact. The objective for the next ten weeks is to polish us into hungry junior creatives. After everything we have learnt in the last two years, I think we are finally ready.

Last week I had the pleasure to jump aboard one of the boats in the Hamburg harbour and soak up some of the city’s maritime spirit. While the waves ebbed and flowed, I had a real nostalgia moment about journeying back to Australia. Nine months is a long time to be away from home but it made me realise how lucky I am to have had the opportunity to study abroad. I started to think about my future: ‘where am I going?’, ‘how am I going to get there?’ and ‘how can I make my contribution count?’.  Maybe those are the thoughts all people have while gazing into the ‘Gateway to the World’.

Sea breeze, windswept face.

Journey along the current.

Gateway to the World.
