Well that’s just fucking awesome news.
Russel and Todd should just accept that the 15 minutes of TV panel show fame doesn’t immediately grant them messiah-like status within the industry.

Nice work Matty
Hahahaha!!! That is hilarious. How squeamish that Howcroft see himself in the role of the saint of all brands!!
I can not see this boding well for you Russel in the future somehow!!!
If it’s a typical ad man stance shouldn’t he have his pants down?
Well done Russle. I dont like what you stand for but I really like you. That is the job done for the ultimate ad man.
Whether you like it or not 5:07, Gruen has created very public personae for Russ and Todd. At least it gives the sensationalist media someone different to turn to for opinion on advertising matters apart from the former usual ‘ad gurus’. At least Todd & Russ have coherent, intelligible points of view. Never mind that in Russ’s case the media don’t understand you really shouldn’t ask an account man for an opinion on creative. But let’s be grateful for baby steps.
Hey CB, I think a bit dropped off at the end. It should read:
He is shown in the portrait in typical ad man stance, leaning forward over a boardroom table getting reamed up the arse by a client who wants it done his way, wants it done yesterday, and wants to pay half what it’s worth.
5:53. Pithy comments like yours give me the shits. Russell is as responsible for the creative turnaround at Y&R Patts as anybody in the creative department. He’s also universally liked by his staff and all those of us lucky to have ever worked with him. If your opinion ever ends up carrying half the weight of Russell’s you can count yourself lucky.
Why did my mind instantly go back to David Brent being offered the role of motivational speaker? I can just see Russell playing Tina Turner’s ‘Simply The Best’ on his Ghetto blaster while he was sitting for this.
Shouldn’t the painting be of him hunched over in a sloppy shirt with his gut sticking out?
I’ve worked with some average CD’s and creatives in my time. and a lot of them have been on that Gruen show. It’s a sad reality. Self-promoters don’t have to be talented.
Jesus wept. Really? I don’t know Horcraft and whether or not he is taking the piss here. But if he’s not we all might as well attach electrodes to our genitals and flog ourselves with a knotted rope if this is the kind of thing we’re supposed to aspire to.
I thought a ‘typical ad man stance’ was on his knees?
Please no portraits of Todd. Please.
Calm down, 6:43, there’s no need to be so hostile. My point is that when the media go to Russ for comment on creative matters they don’t understand that his role isn’t to conceive or execute the work. While I’m sure, as you say, Russ is a great guy who no doubt champions the work of the agency and is inspirational to those who work with him, there’s still a clear misunderstanding about who does what in ad agencies.
this is news?
@ 9:41 ‘ear ‘ear.
It’s a good portrait. Go St Russ!
Russ is a great advocate for the advertising business. He should be canonised.
12:37 What the?
If I’m not mistaken both russ and todds agency won agency of the year in both 2010 and 2010. Go easy on talently self promoters
