Regan Grafton, executive creative director at DraftFCB, Auckland is New Zealand’s representative on the Cannes Lions Radio jury. Grafton, along with most of the Australian and NZ jurors, is reporting exclusively for CB.

I’ve just finished the second day of judging which finished earlier this afternoon (which is good because I’m writing this by the pool.) Day 2 hasn’t been hugely eventful, just a room full of judges sitting in silence with headphones on. Today’s common themes were GPS navigation ads, the use of beeps and moving on from fart sound effects, we now have the over use of poo.

I have listened to some good work, particularly within Innovation.

And the New Zealand work holds up well in all categories.

There have been a few comments from the judges which might be worth considering when you’re entering radio in the future.

– Don’t forget about end lines, they clearly close the loop on an idea and make it memorable.

– Length can also really go against you, especially anything over 60 seconds.

Anyway time a swim and a cold beer.
