Many talented Australian creatives submitted their work into the Visual Design and Communications category this year, vying for a chance to win the prestigious title, $5000 in cash, and a rare 12-month mentorship opportunity with renowned visual designer, Vince Frost.

This year, the winner will also be sent on a trip-of-a-lifetime to the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity where creative professionals come together to debate, learn and be inspired. Cannes Lions is the world’s biggest and most prestigious celebration of creativity in communications.

The Visual Design and Communications category has proven to be one of the program’s most competitive categories, with the high volume of entries signalling the popularity of this sector, further cementing this category on the SOYA calendar.

Brown is one of only three talented visual designers to have won the award, with SOYA365 providing these designers the chance to expand their horizons, build up their business and learn the ropes from one of Australia’s most recognised and celebrate designers.

Brown is a designer living and working in Melbourne. His output and passions intersect art direction, graphic design and custom typography. With a wealth of individual, studio and collaborative experience, he has worked for clients in Australia and internationally across the music, fashion and hospitality industries.

Says Brown: “Considering the strength of the other contestants this comes as a big surprise, I am humbled and honoured. Being able to attend The Cannes Lion Festival will be an awe inspiring experience, not to mention the mentorship with Vince Frost! A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Thankyou SOYA, Qantas and Vince Frost for enabling young Australian creatives.”

For 2012, Brown will be mentored by visual design and communications guru Vince Frost. Based in Sydney, Frost started his own creative studio in London, Frost Design, in 1994 before relocating to Sydney in 2004. Frost’s work links the divide between art and commerce, and includes anything from postage stamps to magazines, books, identities, TV advertising, art direction, online and the built environment. His career arc has been documented in a retrospective at the Sydney Opera House and in a 500-page book, and by awards from many design societies across the globe.

Frost Design continues to work for global clients and continues to win international accolades. Working on a diverse range of projects, from environmental graphics and exhibitions to magazine and book design, corporate identity, brand strategy, advertising and interactive design, Frost’s approach is all about exceptional ideas and adhering to the philosophy that ‘anything is possible’.

SOYA has been instrumental in unearthing and nurturing young artists, designers, and creatives, helping them expand their horizons, build up their business and learn the ropes from some of the greatest creative minds in the world. This year the newly rebranded SOYA365 has also introduced four additional categories: Animation, Interactive Content & Gaming, Architecture & Interior Design and The Written Word.

SOYA365 is open for submissions, with one new creative category closing every month.
