Launch of the Qantas Socceroos 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign via Lowe Sydney. In 2006 Australia was just pleased to be there, this time we’re going to Unleash.

I think these are fucking brilliant.
Bland. They just look like Nike ads from the mid nineties.
very cool.
Look forward to what true football fans make of these. I cast my mind back to the brilliant ‘History’ campaign of 2006 and then hope the Aussie team has come further than the creative. This work should have been kept in the vault for the com games in Delhi.
It’s just not football.
Terrible. Truly terrible. Clichéd. Truly clichéd.
I’d say the Qantas Socceroos need a ‘Director of Creativity’ too.
I canna tell ya nowa NO ONE isa scared ofa you say the Carney.
I don’t want to bursta the bubblea but you won’ta get past the groupa stage, and asa for the kiwis…..
Sorry guys, but is there ANY difference between these, and this:

Could be for the same campaign.
I imagine all that involved in making these commercials are really talented people and I know Chris Riggert for one certainly doesn’t lack talent. But having said that and being a diehard football fan who gets up at ridiculous hours to watch the Socceroos play year round. These spots don’t touch me at all.
In saying this it makes me really interested how these guys are briefed by the FFA and I’m actually really curious as to how half the briefs for football commercials go out.
From a technical aspect, in one of these spots you’ve got Tim Cahill who as a footballer heads the list for goals from the head in the EPL. In this spot he’s about to kick the ball. It’s not what he’s really famous for. He’s only 5′ 8″ but can get above guys far taller. Whilst talking about being technical, in another spot for another brand he takes a penalty kick whilst Marco Bresciano the real penalty specialist walks away. Artistic license? If we were in the UK it would be like running an advert with David Beckham heading in a goal. But If you really love football I imagine things like this help hit the off button in the brain. Perhaps I’m being a pedantic dick.
But what I don’t understand is how none of the spots for the Socceroos talk about or capture the feeling of what it is like to play for the team. Or even for that fact what it was like as kid to play the game that no one believed in and was called wog ball. Most of these guys have chosen the hard road. They’ve probably been vilified at school up until their teens and then had to schlepp around the world to play the game they love. But when they walk onto the pitch in South Africa they are playing for their country and the place they love. Not one commercial I’ve seen captures this spirit.
I’ll probably never work for Lowe for saying the above but I at least can hope the Socceroos kick arse in the World Cup.
im a true fan and these work for me. plus they look and sound great.
How did that chair get onto the pitch?
I’d be angry if someone threw that at me. Usually it’s just coins or lighters.
I doubt Rooney, Ronaldo, Torres …etc are going to be afraid of David Carney. The other two spots make more sense. Like the Italy reference.
Seems like Qantas are running out of marketing steam! if one hasn’t seen the ads these are based on they still have a nice impact though
Mikey
Hey ‘Dragon’ what would you know you twat. You probably drive a european car and wear a beard
Why do these have to be so bloody serious?
Just make me feel good. make me like the players and want to support them.
make it MY team.
is that too much to ask?
If yes, then give someone else a go.

………. sorry what, I feel asleep there for a moment.
oh yeah the ad …..for …. soccer something.
I don’t work for Lowe Nick, but at least you proved you care and have an opinion.
Why don’t they get some money to make something like this actually work, instead of looking like some tired creative from the mid-nineties. That said, I don’t mean it’s the creative that’s to blame for the result, it’s most likely the direction.
What a waste of time and effort.
Written by people who care more about advertising than football. Totally pretentious drivel.
What’s the purpose of these ads? Make people watch the games on TV? That will happen regardless. Waste of money if you ask me.
No wonder they lost the account. This is terrible and predictable.
So where’s the idea?
I can’t believe I wasted the agency’s bandwidth downloading this truly boring campaign.
I like them. I love the attitude.
It’s nice not to see ads showing yet more feel-good fans cheering / tugging on a giant scarf / kicking clients product around like it’s a football.
‘Unleash’ seems to work as an idea for the fans to get behind as well.
I think the ads are great.
And I love the whole concept of “Unleash”.
It positions the Socceroos perfectly for this World Cup.
These look bland boring and dated. There’s nothing adventurous about them. I reckon they could have been taken a lot further with the right direction.
when are we going to get tired of the desaturated too serious vibe? I find this work and its creative attitude to be so tiring.
Eclectic did the sound design
