Curious is also screening ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ in New Zealand at the Rialto Cinemas Newmarket on 11th April before its official opening on the 26th. This premiere screening was devised in partnership with Rialto Cinemas in response to Hollywood Reporter’s summation of the film: “It’s torture to watch JIRO if you have an empty stomach … it’s a crafty bit of food porn.”

So on 11th April, Auckland filmgoers will be treated to a screening of ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ as part of the Rialto’s ‘Film for Foodies’ sessions. At 5:30pm, sushi will be prepared and served by the students of the Professional Bar And Restaurant School, trained under the tutelage of specialist sushi chef Jasbir Kaur, before the film’s screening later that evening.

Says Peter Grasse from Curious: “We haven’t been competing as distributors for very long, but Curious has already established itself with an awarded catalogue of films and documentaries that are drawing local audiences. We’re constantly coming up with ideas to make the cinematic experience more memorable and contextual. It’s good to know that the Curious’ approach to acquiring and distributing film content is getting noticed. “

Cinema Nova describes ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ as an “enthralling documentary” that chronicles the life of 85 year-old Jiro Ono, who works from sunrise to well beyond sunset to taste every piece of fish; meticulously train his employees; and carefully finesse each sushi creation. His restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro only seats 10, but is a phenomenon in Tokyo that makes Jiro the oldest Michelin chef alive.

‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ was also selected to screen at the Sydney Film Festival last year. The documentary made the official selection at Tribeca Film Festival 2011 and is distributed in Australia and New Zealand exclusively by Curious.
