Paola Morabito follows up AIMIA win with a nomination at Banff World Media Awards
Curious director Paola Morabito’s four short documentaries for SBS Digital have just been nominated at the Banff World Media Awards (known as the ‘Rockies’) in Canada.
Called ‘Africa to Australia’, the documentaries tell the stories of four immigrants in Australia trying to make sense of their identity while living in a foreign culture. They screened on SBS Digital in 2010, and were co-funded by Screen Australia.
The Banff World Media Awards celebrate the best television and digitalmedia productions in the world. “I loved making these films because itwas so challenging getting teenagers to open up about their feelings,but when they did their stories were very moving. It’s nice to know theseries is resonating with people overseas too,” says Morabito.
In March, the ‘Africa to Australia’ series also won Best Cultural /Lifestyle Award at the 17th AIMIA Awards at Cockatoo Island.
It follows a string of awards that Morabito’s won already this year, including a Silver New Director Lotus at ADFEST.
‘The Guide Dog Interviews’ (directed by Morabito for Three DrunkMonkeys and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT) were also selected In Book at D&ADthis year in the Direct Response/TV & Cinema Advertising categoryafter being nominated as finalists at the Clios and New York Festivals- an impressive result, especially as ‘The Guide Dog Interviews’ wasMorabito’s first TVC after joining Curious last year.
