NAB urges customers to switch from the big bank bad behaviour in new ‘They’ll never change’ campaign via Clemenger BBDO, Melbourne
This week sees the roll-out of NAB’s latest advertising campaign, titled They’ll never change, via agency Clemenger BBDO, Melbourne.
Over the last two years, NAB has reinvented its business by embarking on a much publicised ‘Fair Value Agenda’. They’ve launched initiative after initiative, all of which have been designed to offer their customers – and Australia as a whole – a better and fairer deal. They’ve abolished account keeping fees, abolished overdrawn fees, abolished credit card over-limit fees, abolished mortgage exit fees, and most impressively, recently committed to having the lowest standard variable rate of the major banks for the third year in a row.

The point of the new campaign is to contrast all these changes with the distinct lack of change that NAB’s competitors are offering. To highlight that while NAB has been doing the right thing by their customers, the other big banks have continued to be decidedly inactive with theirs. In fact, instead of following NAB’s lead in making changes, they’ve resorted to making excuses.
“What’s perhaps a little scary is just how familiar these conversations feel,” says Clemenger BBDO Melbourne ECD Ant Keogh. “This campaign treads somewhere between it’s -funny-because-it’s-true and it’s-terrifying-because-it’s-true. And that’s what we think will motivate even more people to change to NAB.”
The TV aspect of this campaign is led by a 45″ brand ad and three 30″ product ads. These will be supported by radio, online, large format outdoor and print media that actually names the other banks, to really confront the opposition and their inaction.

can you put a link to the ads? great thanks.
Ro n’ Daz not CD’s no more?
Yeah, not that good. Getting a bit over NAB pointing out what their competition is doing wrong.
Some of those sound like things bankers might say. Most don’t.
Barbara?
‘Sh*t bankers say’
http://www.campaignbrief.com/2011/02/nab-breaks-up-with-anz-commban.html has the commentary on the original Break Up, which went on to win Grand Prix at Cannes and made massive amounts of cash for NAB.
It’s just a bit sh*t really.
More nice work from Clems. Damn ballsy for a bank.
A good continuation of the overall theme – solid work, guys.
I am sorry but it’s 28 seconds of telling consumers what you are not rather than what you are. Tactical is easy.Bank Brand advertising is hard. If it was copy school you would tell them to go back and try harder.
The fact is that consumer’s never bought the “break up” at all and these ads are again talking negatively about the category and in particular the Big 4. But people already know this, so are NAB trying to convince people not the bank with the Big 4? Great spots for the smaller banks and credit unions, may just help their acquisition!
Check out the amount of creatives on the credits for one tvc, it’s half the agency. Must be more creatives than work over at clems.
The break up was good now it’s getting tired and feels like the DDB ANZ Barbra ads
Think “Barbara” did the “this is what the other banks are like” idea far better.
Here’s an idea. How about ANZ stop this smarmy smarty pants stuff and just do some honest telly ads that give customers some useful ideas on how to spend less and save more. The punters might like them for that. There’s a big opening for ANZ – or one of the other big 4 – and became the credible voice of the wise use of money.
Im with NAB and my husband is with Commbank. It took nearly 3 months for him to get me a supplementary card! They kept screwing up! I am also URGING him to switch!!!
My experience is written out: http://loveforpeaches.blogspot.com.au/2012/04/more-reasons-to-switch-move-away-from.html
takes two months to get the correct account opened at the NAB. (still not sorted at 10 weeks!)
staff do not give the same answer to a question twice in a row
takes over a week to get to speak to a person on the phone
staff know a little bit about a lot and get facts wrong
some staff say yes you can do this; some staff say no you can’t do this
always put on hold until phone battery runs out – think they do this intentionally when they cannot handle the query
NAB IS BETTER????
WANNA BE EX CUSTOMER OF 25 YEARS
