MIFF 2010… Itʼs a matter of taste
Letʼs face it. When it comes to attending the movies these days, weʼre blessed with a myriad of choices. But making a decision? Thatʼs the hard bit. Will it be comedy or drama? 2D or 3D? The front row or the back row? Or, the biggest dilemma of all, do I want a choctop or popcorn?
Charged with producing the Melbourne International Film Festival Trailer, director Damien Kelly and the team at Badjar Ogilvy faced this predicament head on by getting a box of popcorn and a choctop to fight it out in the backstreets of Melbourne, 70ʼs Kung-Fu style!

eewwww…..
It’s cute.
Love the Popcorn and Choc Top dudes – brilliant stuff!!
Can see what you were trying to do. Some of the names are too obscure and the cut to the snack shop just feels jarring.
It’s funny when big agencies try to be arty but clearly just don’t get art. Art still has to have a single-minded intent and message the same as an ad. Just because a commercial artist doesn’t understand conceptual art doesn’t mean that you purposely go out to produce something meaningless that looks cool.
I think it’s really good. The voiceover is a bit random but it sounds cool. Nicely directed too.
I’m someone who has been going to MIFF for years, and am proud to live in a city with so many great film and arts events, but when I recently saw a tram plastered with a choc top and popcorn box set against storm clouds, I wasn’t impressed.
For me, it doesn’t scream film or Melbourne, nor is it representative of how great MIFF really is. I’ll still go to MIFF – but in those crucial 30 or 45 sec, I want to feel inspired, excited and proud that my city is running one of the best film festivals in the world.
last years one, with the gay astronauts was heaps better.
So many people with nothing better to do than criticize. Why don’t you all do some work?
@12.28 Someone likes gay astronauts. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Looks great – well produced and the concept gets me motivated to check out some flicks and kung fu fight some bad ass popcorn! See you at MIFF
I liked it. I laughed even. The black tshirt, brow scratchers can please themselves.
Pass me the Jaffas.
@12:45 new to the blog? This is getting off very lightly.
I’d suggest the degree of difficulty here is very very low. And I’ll leave it at that.
@ David – Would you consider zero budget a degree of difficulty? You pious tosser.
This is good fun. Excellent zoomage. Would have been nice to see this concept taken even further (i.e. had more money thrown at it) and had a 60 sec fight scene. Still very enjoyable and completes it’s primary goal of reminding MIFF’s potential audience that it is MIFF time again.
Definitely a matter of taste.
I think it looks great and really effective and represents MIFF as the high brow sophisticated festival that it is.
On the strength of this TVC I think all that’s missing from this year’s festival program is an Adam Sandler retrospective.
Love the ad, it’s fast and furious and makes me want to investigate the directors whose names I don’t recognise.
My fav bit is when the popcorn pieces fly from the box. Go choc tops!
An Adam Sandler retrospective would take me to my happy place.
