Miele launches ‘Stories of sustainability’ – uncovering the passion of Australian artisans

World-leading manufacturer of domestic appliances, Miele, has launched a four-part social film series showcasing Australian artisans across various regions of the Australian landscape.

The series is shot through the eyes of well-renowned chefs Matt Stone and Jo Barrett, taking viewers on a unique and time-honoured journey of sustainability from Tassie to the Northern Territory.

The short film series of Australian producers, growers and creators uncover how local artisans bring sustainability to the forefront of their craft and what drives their passion for the planet.

Be it crafting knives or cooking on the beach, the series goes far beyond the produce to support local producers and their communities. Working with First Nations peoples and local experts, each short film shows what can be done to support conservation, growth and regeneration of our ecosystem.

In an industry-first, Miele has been awarded the ‘Green Seal’ certification from the Environmental Media Association (EMA) adding to its growing list of ecocredentials.

Honouring and recognising progress in sustainable production, the latest EMA certification commends Miele, who together with Chocolate Studios, set out to make a fully sustainable content series to encourage Australians to live more sustainably.

Michele Laghezza, marketing director for Miele ANZ says production was tasked with producing and shooting the series with the lightest touch possible: “From waste management and recycling on set to utilising local extras and props, we consistently looked for ways to make the series more economical, environmentally-friendly and lessen our footprint.”

Miele will offset its emissions from the production with Greenfleet to the Noosa restoration reconciliation project, which protects our climate by restoring legally protected native forest, as well as creating vital koala habitat, delivering verified social and cultural benefits for Traditional Owners and replacing monoculture plantation with biodiverse native ecosystem.

Guided by Pangolin Associates, Miele have kept a record of their environmental footprint to make the production as sustainable as possible.

With emotive music and compelling storytelling, each episode in the series is several minutes long and takes viewers from locations across the country, then back to the Future Food System house for a day of cooking with Matt or Jo and the Miele appliances.

Having spent six months growing, harvesting and cooking food sourced right from the pop-up in 2021, these award-winning chefs are both long-time Miele partners and sustainability advocates.

Stone is one of Australia’s leading sustainable chefs, known for his philosophy of using local, organic ingredients to produce nutritious dishes with zero waste. Similarly, Barrett, a Melbourne-born chef in her own right, shares the same vision for minimising waste and using creative techniques to get the most from every ingredient.

Adds Laghezza: “The story of this series is to showcase pristine natural environments, quality ingredients and world class artisans who deeply care for the environment. We wanted to show viewers the smorgasbord of possibilities to choose local, ethically and sustainably sourced produce, and support local growers, producers and creators at the same time.”

Sustainability is an ever-changing landscape. Through this new series, Stories of Sustainability, Miele shows that it’s Australians’ collective responsibility to reduce waste and energy consumption, both now and in the future.

For the German-born appliance manufacturer, sustainability has been entrenched in the values and traditions of the company since day one. A member of the UN sustainability organisation Global Compact and signatory of its Diversity Charter, Miele publishes a sustainability report every two years and has consistently led from the front when it comes to responsible and sustainable manufacturing.
