M&C Saatchi Sydney’s Optus Clever Buoy picks up two Grand Prix at the 2015 Clio Awards in NY
Optus Clever Buoy – the trailblazing shark detection system that uses world-first technology – has won M&C Saatchi two Grand Prix at the globally prestigious Clio Awards in New York overnight.
The breakthrough kit – a collaboration between M&C Saatchi and Optus to demonstrate the strength of the telco’s network – won Grand Prix in the hotly contested Digital and Public Relations categories.
The global best-in-shows followed Clever Buoy winning Golds for both those categories plus a Clio Silver for Engagement/Experiential.
The accolades come just days after Clever Buoy was shortlisted as one of two solutions selected from more than 70 options submitted for further investigation at the NSW Government’s Shark Summit in Sydney this week.
The emergency summit was called following the spate of shark attacks to hit the state this year, 13 thus far in 2015 compared with a total of three in 2014.
For the past 15 months Clever Buoy has taken global awards juries by storm, highlighted by it Lion-haul at Cannes, including the coveted Titanium and four Golds; five D&AD Awards; the SXSW ‘Internet of Things’; Spikes Asia Innovation Grand Prix and the IAB MIXX Gold.
Says Andy Dilallo, chief creative officer, M&C Saatchi: “This is another exceptional result for M&C Saatchi and is testament to the creative people we have working with us and our on-going commitment to producing influential work.”

It’s still a fucking prototype.
It’s a story board of something that could happen.
I like how they sent the guy who’s new and doesn’t have anything to do with the winning work, to collect the awards.
It’s a storyboard of something that IS happening and WILL be on beaches.
Hi No maybe you’re right. But until it happens it’s still (as you say) a story board.
And yes it’s a very nice idea but there are lots of nice ideas that don’t happen.
Exactly. It should win awards once that happens, not now.
The only awards it should be eligible for now should be for innovation.
There was a summit this week in NSW on the issue of sharks. CleverBuoy was one of three options discussed. All are still being evaluated, and all need further testing particularly in high seas/storms etc. Reliability is an issue. In the meantime, it’s likely that the netting program will be extended throughout NSW.
And no mention of M&C with CleverBuoy, only Shark Attack Mitigation Systems.
Arguing and defending this concept as a proven working idea boggles the mind.
How desperate is M&C for awards.
Just because one jury erred, doesn’t mean all other juries must tow the line and follow suit?
Awarding it as a working concept is akin to hailing Matt Damon’s The Martian a documentary film of reality.
The other Grand Prix contenders were robbed.
GOOD IDEA THAT SHOULDN’T BE ENTERED INTO AWARDS. BACK IN THE DAY YOU’D CALL THIS A SCAM. GET IT ONTO THE FREAKING BEACHES INSTEAD OF TRYING TO WIN AWARDS WITH ONLY A THOUGHT AND A PROP BOUY, PEOPLE ARE DYING OUT THERE!
When are they going to rename M&C Saatchi to Dilallo Inc., what a genius he has only just arrived and cracked the Optus clever bouy idea
LOLz
Id have to agree with the previous posters. James offering Andy the chance to collect the awards and Andy accepting shows a huge lack of EQ on both of their parts. Surely anyone worth their salt would say I wasn’t involved and send the people that were. Or at least take them and have them on stage collecting the awards.
I’d also agree that this is a great idea when it happens. Not yet.
re comments above. The new ECD is hardly the first senior person to ride this wave. In fact, he sounds respectful about it unlike a few others over there that have travelled the world and actively sought to claim it (through indirect social posts of course), despite having had absolutely nothing to do with it. Some not even working at the agency when it was first conceptualised. This is a pitiful industry at times.
It’s a shame it can’t actually save lives, but there is no doubting it is a wonderful idea. Some very clever minds around the world have endorsed it.
A more trivial and vacuous shame is the new ECD being quoted when he clearly had nothing to do with it.
