M&C Saatchi Auckland and Localist ask ‘What’s good around here?’, with launch of world first location focused photo sharing website
Auckland-baseddirectory and media service Localist has launched a new way of sharingphotos snapped using the popular US-based application Instagram. Thecompany has created what chief executive Blair Glubb calls a “visualTwitter stream” on its new whatsgoodaroundhere.co.nz web site by usingInstagram’s application programme interface (API).
Says Glubb: “Until nowthere was no way to see Auckland-only images in one place online. Sowe’ve launched a web site where you can see what’s happening locally, right down to your patch of Auckland. It’s a more visual way to tapinto what people are doing this minute.”
Localist’s agency partner M&C Saatchi, who dreamt up and built thetechnology interface, believes this is the first time the Instagram APIhas been used like this.
Mr Glubb said iPhone users just download the Instagram photo sharing application from iTunes. They then visit whatsgoodaroundhere.co.nz and, in real time, the site pulls in all photos taken on Instagram in the greater Auckland area.
“Thisgives a real-life snapshot of what’s going on in Auckland. Have youjust had the best coffee in Auckland? Did you buy some amazing shoes? Was the ferry ride this morning stunning? Take a photo and you’re away.”
“Userscan then check out all the images taken within a 5km radius of theircurrent location. When they see something they like, they can click onthe photo and find out more about it.”
Mr Glubb said Localistwants to help Aucklanders better discover and share what’s good aboutour region and whatsgoodaroundhere.co.nz provides a brand new way ofdoing this.
“Many of us are using social media to share what weare crazy about. We’ve gone one step further by creating a way forAucklanders to actually see what’s good around here, then let them findout more about the places they like the look of.”
M&CSaatchi developed the site. Its head of strategy Tony Burt said thecompany saw the opportunity with Instagram being used around the worldby people to show their friends where they are, and what they are doing.
“Bycombining these images with geo-location data we saw we could provide afantastic way of showing what is going on in different parts ofAuckland, in real time.”
Instagram’s photo sharing abilitiesmake it a stand-out from the other applications currently around.Overseas, it has had rave reviews for leading the way with its simpleintegration between social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitterand Flickr.
