Lack of support for the PADC Festival of Ideas could make this year’s event the last – Tinning
PADC President Andrew Tinning says the response to this year’s Festival of Ideas has been disappointing, and has issued this plea for more support for the event.
I won’t pull any punches, the response to this year’s Festival of Ideas registration has been underwhelming.
Every year, we endeavour to lure some of the region’s leading creative minds to Perth. It’s not just about the judging (which we could quite easily do remotely), it’s about creating an opportunity for the local industry to be exposed to national and international talent of this calibre. Take it from me, you’re never ‘too old’ or ‘too experienced’ to learn something new.
I for one am looking forward to hearing from Reed Collins, a Perth boy who made the move to the USA and ended up being ranked as the world’s no.1 creative. Or Ralph Barnett who grew up in my old home town of Greymouth (you think Perth is isolated!). Ralphie was one of the masterminds behind the legendary Best Job in the World campaign. If an agency in Brisbane can produce work of that calibre, why can’t Perth? I find that inspiring and can’t wait to find out how they pulled it off.
This is a once a year opportunity that quite frankly might very well be the last if we don’t make the numbers this year.
The judges have invested a huge amount of time and effort into preparing their presentations and it will be embarrassing not only to the club but the local industry if they are greeted with a lack of interest as opposed to a show of respect.
This is an opportunity that’s not just limited to creatives. To all of you young (and old) suits and planners out there, creativity and passion for it is not just the domain of the creative department, everyone is responsible for the work. This is an opportunity for you to be equally inspired by some world class creative talent and share some of that inspiration with your clients.
It’s not too late to register. We’ll keep the door open until end of play this Friday, 2nd September. So c’mon – show your support, show your respect and show that you give a rats about creativity.
