KWP! ask you to keep regular with Ultra Tune

KWP!’s brief from UltraTune in SA was to get people to have their car servicedregularly to avoid problems down the track. The word regular got themthinking about bowel movements (naturally) and the ad here is theresult. Lucky for KWP! Tim Carracher at UltraTune is a good client andlet them go with with the number 1 idea, not the number 2.

But how does this piece of communication make me feel that going to Ultra Tune is better for me, or my car, than Fred down the road?
‘zactly Nic, this ad just reminded me to get the car serviced…with my own mechanic.
From the Benny Hill school of advertising.
I prefer this, one of their other gems.

Way to come up with a metaphor and then back out at the last second.
Props for getting a shit ad on TV. Well done.
ok, if we give places like Brisbane and Perth shit for coming up with dros, then i declare it open season on Adelaide.
that is spectacular…ly bad!
I like it. Made me chuckle which there isn’t much to chuckle about on TV these days.
you guys are kidding yourself. Obviously don’t get the market in SA.
It’s a simple fact that punters are leaving their cars longer between services, this ad clearly talks up a solution and education.
I love the fact that people feel they can comment but don’t leave a name ie Anonymous. At least some clients are prepared to put this stuff on TV and have a little humour as opposed to much of the rubbish some supposed ‘names of the industry’ on the eastern side get produced.
shit
Does SA still get regional TVCs? If that’s the case then this will be the best on TV.
If not, can’t hate an ad that cracks a few shit jokes in there now can you?
Looking forward to the follow up where they release the chocolate hostage.
Better than anything I could come up with. But then again, I’m useless.
Sweet and charming, as are all Ormston’s offerings, but lacking the crucial reason why to choose Ultratune, as others have identified. Perhaps we adnerds concentrate too much on branding and the great motoring unwashed will take the message on board and proceed lemming-like at regular 6 month intervals to their nearest South Australian Ultratune. But I doubt it.
Obviously too many ‘nice’ people involved in the approval process, thereby missing the omission of the crucial ‘reason why’. Clearly Withy was away on holiday.
Trimble and Jeebus… do all of you have quaint little nicknames at KWP?
throw dirt
lay some cable
drop the kids off at the pool…
more please!
Yes, 6:15, everybody at KWP has a quaint little nickname. It’s agency policy, right down to their business cards.
Reading many of the comments here reminds me why i so often would rather chop my own nuts off with a blunt, rusty pen knife before poking my own eyes out with a chickens foot than admit i am in advertising.
What a bunch of pathetic bitches you all are. sad. weak. and many of you also f*cking gutless who think it’s cool to bag, but are too absolutely piss weak to leave even a first name.
No, i don’t work at kwp. no, i don’t think the spot will win gold at cannes. and yep, maybe it doesn’t have some amazing USP as i’m sure all your perfectly conceived and executed, beyond-criticism ads do. But do i think the average punter who needs to get their car serviced will like it, giggle, talk about it, remember it, and be half a chance to go there? abso-bloody-lutely.
“Okay Mr Client, stand back, have we got an idea for you, it won’t win a Gold at Cannes admittedly, and well, to be honest, it doesn’t have an amazing USP but we do think the average punter will giggle and remember it. Plus results-wise, in return for your masses of cash, we’re hoping there’s half a chance some will go to your store, what do you reckon?
Oh, you appear to have set fire to my children.”
Anyone who says “I don’t work at X agency, but…”
usually works there.
Trimble, Jeebus & Sputnik. Good name for an ad agency, legal firm, power rock trio or finishing order for the Melbourne Cup.
Trimble Jeebus & Sputnik. Sounds like a good name for a new ad agency, law firm, power rock trio or 1, 2, 3 in the Melbourne Cup.
How about these offerings for the next round…
– sitting on teddy’s arm
– the turtle poking its head out
You can have those KWP.
People know what UltraTune do. People aren’t idiots (mostly), they don’t need complete hand holding with a USP to justify why they should use UltraTune. A tune up is a tune up. The ad gives UltraTune a personality which many will associate with and think they’re ‘my kind of people’ and therefore use them. People will talk about it and not just ‘Anonymously’.
And’ most recent Anonymous’, unless you’re directly offering happy endings at the end of the tune up, how many ads can guarantee more people will turn up in store??
In related news,
Just heard Jiffy Lube™ in the States have apparently picked up the idea too, scored Angelina Jolie for the role of the mother!!
Although their script ends with “I just need to go and have another brown baby”
For the record, unlike many of you. i am happy to be identified. my actual name is sputnik. no, not born that way. yes, it’s wanky. started out as a joke (still is to many) but has been my name for 23 years now.
i once worked at Leo Burnett under James Rickard (current CD at kwp!) and he sacked me.
About 10 years later i worked for a company that kwp! took over, and i was sacked again.
So other than a brief stint during the take over period, i have never worked at kwp! and given my double-sacking record, have no reason to defend them. Nor am i related to or sleeping with anyone there. (not that there isn’t a few people i wouldn’t like to.)
i am more than happy for campaign brief to publish my email address, but they have already linked a website i am involved with so easy enough to track me down and work out who i am.
my tirade, whilst no doubt wasted, really was to point out how sad, bitchy and a waste of energy so much of these comments are.
i know i’d be curious to know how many of the schoolyard comments are form people who have done awesome work? at least ‘Chuck’ was honest when he called himself ‘useless’. (I also make no claims to creative superiority, i just know bitches when i see them.)
should i have also joined the fray and wasted my time? no, probably not. but in the interest of clarity, let’s consider some of those facts clarified. have a lovely day.
Hey everybody, stop picking on old people.
Get back to work, juniors.
Or you’ll never get a tvc brief.
I think Sputnik is Charlie Sheen.
Another pun from KWP! Sorry i think they call them ads. Well done boys. i think they have a photo of Glen Cooper being mounted by a horse, otherwise why would he still be there. i mean 10 years of pun’s, please.
Ok fair enough people. Those who comment about an agency obviously have a vendetta against them. Let’s not judge the ad on the how you would like to take their clients. You know who you are….2.13 pm. from Adelaide.
Good on you Sputnik! Hey I laughed at the ad. Didn’t make it. Don’t work at the agency but I laugh at poo jokes! As I think most people whose heads aren’t firmly placed within close proximity to the origin of said item. Will it make me go to Ultra Tune? No! And no-one here could ever offer me a convincing argument to do so or create an ad that would. Funny Ad Ormy!
Onya Sputnik well said. Plenty of legends here wishing something they worked on was good enough to be featured on CB. I say kudos for getting that through. It’s one of those lines you’d wish you could have squeezed in and hey they got it in. We have plenty of safe boring stuff on our screens and plenty of things that aren’t even remotely entertaining. Well done lads and Charlie.
Here’s a free one for Mr Marketing Manager, Ultra Tune (Adelaide)
Same talent talking to camera….
I fancy a regular tune up but my hubby’s useless with the tool. After a while I get sick of servicing myself so I get my motor cleaned at Ultra Tune. They also check out my headlights, flick my switch and give my airbags a work out. Then they drive it up the back track to my happy place.
Waggle eyebrows.
LOGO.
This is a good ad. Wish I’d done it.
I feel the guys berating it for the generic proposition are missing something. Namely, the service is generic, so ideally it the advertising’s job to differentiate it by adding personality to the brand. It’s called creating a brand and it is what we are here for, and what this ad does.
Adding personality – and getting top-of-mind while you are at it – is not easy but in the long run is much more useful and powerful desperately trying to find perhaps non-existant product differentiators.
Well done to all, including the client.
Yes, 9:13 but what we’re paid for is to make the generic NOT seem generic.
I think we have our next storey…
Nice to see where the IP addresses have come from…
Old etc,
I don’t understand the ‘But’ in front of your sentence. You appear to be agreeing with me that differentiating the generic is our job.
You may disagree with me about whether this commercial achieves it, but differentiating a brand by giving its ads a unique personality seems to be perfectly valid to me.
Reading comments about the nature of brand differentiation – whether personality alone is enough etc – is stimulating and constructive. Great to see.
See? It’s not that hard to play nice now is it?
Hi guys,
I am the client!
Pleased to see the ad has got the world in a tither! First rule of advertising is to be noticed. So a tick there. Has it increased business yes but it is a very tough market and many are going backwards so a single digit increase is good but not great.
For those poor soles who don’t get it or want the account because they can do better I am only able to give you one comment…. sorry.
And KWP will keep our advertising whilst they remain well, creative!
