Recruiting donors via Facebook, the Two Degrees for Africa viral campaign has set a goal to raise $1 million dollars to help combat children affected by famine and drought in Africa. The campaign strategy invests in a pyramid scheme, where donors recruit their friends via Facebook and email.

“I have personally seen media reports of the worst drought to hit Africa in 60 years but was immune to the typical media footage which shows malnourished children in hospital being attended to by care workers,” admits Burrows. “But this was different. It was horrific footage of kids being left to die, and we had to do something.”

Within one week, Two Degrees of Africa attracted 500 donors and rose a total of over $24,000, all without the expense of TV commercials and fundraising events and with the help of partners Very Livingston, Symple, bywave, Toby Burrows Photography and JayGrey.
