Jane Campion + Exit’s Garth Davis attend Sundance to screen miniseries ‘Top of the Lake’
After spending most of 2012 working on the miniseries, Garth Davis, who co-directed Top of The Lake with Jane Campion, attended the world premier at Sundance on Sunday.
The audience got to see all 6 hours of the miniseries which screened in two 3 hour blocks. It will be screened again at the Berlin Film Festival next month. Screening all 6 hours in one day was a first for Sundance.
Says Davis: “My obvious fear was ‘will the audience cope… but it was the opposite: they devoured it with immense passion and couldn’t wait to get more.”
The haunting crime drama was shot in New Zealand and stars Elizabeth Moss, David Wenham, Peter Mullan and Holly Hunter. The screenwriters/creators were Campion and Gerard Lee.
Sundance described Top Of The Lake as: “A chilling six-hour saga about a detective tasked with uncovering hidden secrets in a tiny New Zealand town. When Tui Mitcham, the pregnant 12-year-old daughter of a local drug king, refuses to reveal the identity of her child’s father and tries to drown herself in the freezing waters of Lake Top, Robin Griffin, a tenacious detective specializing in juveniles, is brought in to handle the case. But when Tui suddenly disappears, Robin embarks on a search that forces her to dissect not only the tangled drama of Lake Top’s town folk, but also her own convoluted past.”
The series will air in Australia on March 24 and in New Zealand March 25.
Davis returns to the Exit office next week.
