Diary of a disaster: Make Brisbane’s executive CD Rem Bruijn reports from the water’s edge
Top of the morning to you. Actually, it is just that. A beautiful sunny day. Surreal.
Yesterday was too.
From what I could see, yesterday morning started out pretty much business as usual.
It was raining as it has been all summer and it was the day after Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley got decimated, so it was a bit weird but I don’t think many people saw any reason not to go to work.
By 10am the situation began to evolve. Everyone began to lift one foot out of the ‘get on with the job’ camp and move it to the ‘impending natural disaster’ camp.
I was on a location recce for a property client. It was pissing rain and we were walking through a 4 inch deep blanket of water, but we were determined to get the job down so that we could shoot next week and avoid a weather cancellation if at all possible.
Ironically we were visiting prestige riverfront property. I wish I took a photo of all the wet converses left at the door.
The recce progressed well but by about 11.30am the client spent most of it on the phone attending to matters of evacuating staff from their Southbank offices and building levee banks around the very development we were visiting.
By noon, the entire CBD was beginning to evacuate.
There was rumour of Central Station shutting down at 2pm. So agencies (and all businesses) sent their staff home.

At Cutting Edge Post Production, editors and animators became sandbag fillers (left). This morning, the river is at the doors (top photos).

Make Communications is operating by remote today. Everyone is working from home as the power has been cut in the CBD as well as the roads.
Business as usual ha!
To my knowledge, no agencies have gone under at this stage. I expect most, if not all, will be okay. Even Cutting Edge.
Anyhow, I’ll let you do the investigative journalism Lynchy. I have a waterfront property ad to write. I shit you not!
cheers mate
Rem

Good on you Rem … surrela yes, I heard from Clems this moning that it was a perfect Queensland day, blue skies, but brown water plus flood and fire at Suncorp Stadium. Wow, what a country we choose to lve and work in!
Hey Rem, we know you’ll Make it (if you’ll pardon the pun). And so will Brisbane.
Chin up, from an ad industry worker in sunny, dry, hot WA.
Cutting Edge guys – I’m sure you’ll get a few extra jobs from Australian agencies to help get you back on your feet. Make sure you let the CB blog know how you go over next few weeks.
Thanks Rem.
My thoughts go out to all you guys and also my mates over at Cutting Edge.
Surely there’s a benefit in having both a waterfront and back?
Well well well welcome to Australia fokes who calls people fokes these days
