Creativity in isolation thrives as Australian agency folk turn to clever side hustles
The outbreak of Covid-19 has shaken the world to its core, forcing the creative industries to pivot and adapt to new ways of working. But it’s true that creativity can thrive in the face of adversity and across the industry, agency folk are embracing and forging new side hustles.
From beautifully illustrated greeting cards to a fully animated computer game, creative teams from some of Australia’s best advertising agencies are putting their creativity to the test beyond client briefs.
From DDB Sydney, art director Elaine Li and copywriter Jared Wicker have created greeting cards to send friends during isolation. In recognition that people are feeling lonelier than ever before, the cards are designed to get people to connect in an old-fashioned way.
The cards are available via Esty with all the profits going to Foodbank Australia to help people in need. Check them out here.
Proving that creativity isn’t confined to the creative department, Lahna Wong, accounts payable officer at DDB Sydney, created illustrated badges to encourage social distancing also available via Esty here.
Independent agency Bear Meets Eagle on Fire, in partnership with T&DA and Rumble Studios, has created a retro-inspired arcade game to provide a fun distraction during quarantine. The highest score on the leader board will win a year supply of tater tots.
Siobhan Fitzgerald, formerly associate creative director at M&C Saatchi, was driven to her new venture after identifying a surge in porn consumption during Covid-19. Fitzgerald recently launched a publishing platform called The Good Bits, a platform that provides women with the sexiest parts of romance books from bestselling authors. Through The Good Bits, Fitzgerald aims to tell stories that are diverse, accessible, inclusive and body positive.

These are all great ideas, but it’s worth noting that it’s not just the creative minds who are still employed at agencies who have been putting their creativity to good use. There are many of us who have unfortunately lost our advertising jobs due to COVID-19 who are putting our extra time to good use.
Personally, I’ve used the time to create an initiative to help the hospitality industry at this tough time called First Feast Back. The aim is to get people planning the first feast they’ll go out for after the restrictions end, then buy a voucher for that meal now to give the restaurants some much needed cash flow. You can check it out at firsfeastback.com or on Instagram (@FirstFeastBack).
But this comment isn’t just about shameless self-promotion. As I’ve mentioned, many have found themselves out of work lately, so it’d be great to hear about the initiatives they’re working on, because they’re the people who could really do with the industry’s support right now.
Nice idea George, really nice. Good name too.
So we can expect the various award shows to be inundated with side hustles over the next little while.
Why does everyone assume everything is done just for awards?
It is a great idea George, the only down side I see is if these restaurants/cafes get a whole wad of cash whilst they are closed, which they will no doubt spend, imagine the angst it will cause them three months down the track feeding all these large groups and not getting paid as you have already spent the money.
@Huuuummm, thanks for the feedback. Yes, that’s definitely something I considered when creating this, but in the end it came down to:
A) The angst of having to feed these groups down the track when their doors are open and business is flowing pales in comparison to the angst of having little or no income coming in, which is a situation that many restaurants are facing right now.
B) Collecting money now for a service you have to provide at an unknown date down the track is inherent to offering gift cards, and is something that all of these restaurants would have had to assess and manage in the past.
At the end of the day, I’m just trying to help restaurants use a product they already offer to help drive cash flow during this tough period.
My side hustle is taking a break from f*cking advertising…
