Bestads Top 6 of the Week reviewed by Tom O’Keefe, executive CD North America, Draftfcb
Winner: WWF ‘Side By Side’. We’ve seen the match-up thing before, but this one is so well executed it almost reinvents the idea. And the fire scene near the end is the perfectly placed pay-off. Runner up is Meteor ‘Girls’ – a ridiculously simple way to promote a ridiculously simple offer. The deft writing teeters at going over-the-top, but never does.
I’ve got to go with Betili ‘1+1=3’. Super simple. Bold. Funny. It doesn’t matter what the offer is – sex sells! Runner up is Vodacom ‘Stripper’. I know this comes from our office in South Africa, but nepotism be damned – it’s a great product demo.
My favorite is Nokia ‘Day’. A simple idea beautifully executed with great detail – makes you stop and think (not labor) about the message. No clear runner-up here for me, but I do give Galeria Melissa credit for an amazing achievement in Post-it installations.
My favorite is Converse ‘Desire’. Forget about the interactive technology, it’s the song – a 60’s/Etta James/go-go/soul romp – that drives this wild ride. Close second is Ikea ‘Come Into The Closet’. Enough goofy fun in this that you’re not even aware you’re learning about furniture and being sold – just what you’d expect from Ikea.

I disagree with this re the WWF ad….
‘We’ve seen the match-up thing before, but this one is so well executed it almost reinvents the idea. And the fire scene near the end is the perfectly placed pay-off.’
I’ve seen the match-up technique done loads better (NBA ad from the 90s). This was a pretty timid concept.
