Australia bombs at Press Lions
Not one Australian entry made the cut at the shortlist stageof the Press Lions, announced this morning in Cannes.
Australia’s best chance in Press, the Defence Force Recruitment campaign via George Patterson Y&R Melbourne (which made the Outdoor Lions shortlist) was knocked out because some jurors claimed it was too similar to the Halifax campaign out of the UK.
New Zealand fared better with Colenso BBDO, Auckland scoring all six finalists for New Zealand, three for Vespa and three for Amnesty International.
In all, 394 entries made thecut, with metal to be awarded Tuesday night at the Press Lions ceremony.

Press is so 2003. It’s all about the 60 second audio only Cyber Promo Lion.
That would be the Halifax campaign from 1814. How long ago does it count???
No one from Patts would have been working in advertising when that was done.
Oh come on, I love to bag other agencies work, but that reference is so old it is just plain silly. Could anyone really have been thinking of the English Halifax campaign from the 80’s when they were working on the NAvy press stuff. Really????
“Australia’s best chance in press … knocked out”. Wow, talk about a veiled compliment. Way to destroy that teams chance at any other awards.
Didn’t see any other inside scoop for why other stuff didn’t win. Feels a little fishy to me.
Bad luck Chris & Simon. You’ve a right to be pissed.
Fingers crossed for the outdoor results and hope those juries didn’t go to lunch together before awarding metal.
D
A couple of points.
Every year, the shortlist at Cannes is filled with derivative work. Fuck me dead, three years ago I even saw a Swiss Army Knife press idea on the wall – no shit. As a category, print is so done, almost everything is derivative.
Secondly, the press/poster shortlist at Cannes is also filled with bullshit scam work, and the defence work was real. Amnesty, Vespa… yeah, whatever. Go for a job anywhere, and you’ll get a much better response from the defence work than you would for vespa/wwf/amnesty type work – awards or not.
Oh well.
that’s a bit stinky
We all knew it was too close to Halifax. I guess in the end it shows….
Never mind any similarity with Halifax. Let’s go back to fundamentals. It’s a totally superficial recruitment campaign that has never deserved praise, and has only attracted positive comments from people who know fuck all about advertising. There, I’ve said it. So shoot me (with your gun made from people).
