ANZ brings in the fraud squad
DDB Melbourne introduces the ANZ Fraud Squad, a team of ANZ employees doing whatever it takes to help protect ANZ customers from fraudulent transactions on their cards. In this spot, the boss tests making an unauthorised internet purchase on a card, resulting in the card omitting helium gas (rather than poisonous gas). The spot resolves with the ANZ Fraud Money Back Guarantee.

What happened to the falcon?
What happened to the desktop action over the heads?
Atrocious
just a massive difference between what M&C are doing for ANZ, and what DDBoom are doing for ANZ.
give me DDB stuff anyday of the week.
Time for a new approach ANZ, this formula is getting very tired and unfunny. Middleditch can’t shoot what isn’t there.
That’s good. It’s funny. I know what you’re selling me.
Selling good creative to a bank is hard. Well done.
A.
Sorry, but no!
Bring back the Falcon!!
This is appalling from a brand perspective. Massive disconnect between work from different agencies and all over the show from a customer’s perspective. Clearly different internal departments doing whatever they want.
Yeah, that’s pretty bad.
It’s sunny outside – why so down?
There’s nothing wrong with these ads.
Pretty funny actually.
Good on ANZ for continuing with the comedy slant.
It’s much appreciated in a world of dire bank advertising.
Please don’t discourage this.
Clients read this blog you know.
Lighten up.
Clients don’t read this blog. They’re much more concerned about their high paying jobs of which signing off on the right ad is 2%. If they really did read this blog the industry would be in an even more dire situation than it is already as they would see how much of their money is wasted on trying to win those lame awards.
I like DDB’s funny card ads for ANZ. Much better than M&C’s unfunny brand ads for ANZ. But I don’t blame M&C necessarily – imagine trying to get a decent brand ad for a big bank through… that stupid ‘we live in your world’ stuff has got the client’s fingerprints all over it.
This one’s not up to the standard of the others, however. Still raises a bit of a smile, but not as enjoyable as the Falcon or the one with the little dude who couldn’t unlock the door. Still good for the category, and if the majority of ads on TV were as good as this one, we’d be in a pretty good place I reckon.
Hey Freddie – Thanks for the atrocious comment – is that all you can muster up? So what would you do?
I think these are great spots. When you look at the bank landscape out there and particularly the creative work they are producing this is leading the way by a mile.
It’s memorable and funny.
@ 10.41 – I agree … funny and memorable
trying to sell creative to a bank is no laughing matter.
nice one dudes.
Same idea as commbank. We’ve come up with a dumb idea to promote your product…
I think this blog would be a hell of a lot fairer if there was a simple rule.
Take DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY into consideration.
Banks, telcos, cleaning products are all VERY, VERY tough to get anything through.
So, let’s give anyone who can get something half decent up a break, it would have been one hell of a tough sell.
Beer, charities and anything that looks vaguely scammy – go for it. If it’s great, it’ll survive on the onslaught anyway.
Everyone cool with that?
After all, we’re all doing this – we know what the boys would have gone through.
“I called ANZ and they confirmed the helium ad wasn’t theirs.
Then I cancelled the campaign and issued… ay-knee-you one.”
I’m with you 4:52.
After a few viewings, you start to see the merit here given that it’s a prick of a category. You only need to ask yourself: when was the last time a bank ad put even the beginnings of a smirk on your face? What’s usually approved is like the ANZ brand spot or BOQ’s tired old meet-the-manager and I-should-know-because-I-own-the-store type approach. The helium ad may be a little loose, but it’s not bad when you consider it in context.
Love them.
Saw them on the telly and made me smile.
Hard to back up after Falcon but at least this brand and this part of their business have ads that you can remember. Such a tough category banks and cards to get work through.
Nice one pohms.
Nothing more than a cheap thrill and rewards the viewer with a smile. Maybe ad memorability but little brand memorability and totally disconnected from the core brand message. A couple of funny ads might excite some, but won’t do much beyond that. Looks like they’re trying to copy CBA, but not doing as good a job.
Just to be clear on one point. The DDB ANZ campaign started out life in 2005. The Commbank campaign came along at least 2 (3?) years’ later.
So ‘same idea as commbank’ should read ‘same idea as ‘ANZ’ And ‘looks like they’re trying to copy CBA’ should read ‘looks like they’re trying to copy ANZ’. Creatively both campaigns are good, occasionally really good. CBA have bigger budgets and run more ads which improves the chances of getting a really good one up.
Ho hum, here we go again. Another bank trying to be funny and trying to connect, but failing miserably.
Isn’t this what all banks in Australia mandatorily have to do. I had 3 fraudulant transactions on my credit card in a country I have never even heard of and on the same day that I purchased my groceries at my local woolies, it took 8 weeks to reclaim my money. Where was the falcon then. The guy I spoke on the phone to was at time rude.
A nice advertising campaign is one thing but you need to back it up with good customer service ANZ. My experience with Jetstar mastercard and Virgin mastercard have been 100% better than my experience with an ANZ Visa Gold Card that I have the privleged of payment over $100 a year for.
Any advertising campaign from ANZ I look at with a far amount of skeptism (especially ANZ credit dept) so you have to do better than offering me what the other banks offer but dont have the expensive ad.
Between this, and the Barbara spots, looks like it’s death to those bizarre folders coming out of people’s heads!
I think it’s a pretty funny ad, with a strong message. None of the other banks are out there telling people they’re covered in the case of fraud, so well done ANZ.
