Agency Spy: Goodby, Silverstein & Partners’ logo too similar to one created well over a century ago

Last week US trade press site Agency Spy pointed out that the Commonwealth Bank’s US agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners’ new logo is eerily similar to one created well over a century ago. It created enough of a stir that it merited a response from agency co-namesake/founder Rich Silverstein. Agency Spy has got hold of a memo that Silverstein issued to the entire agency just two days after their post.

Hacks
monkey magic.
Ligatures, schmigatures.
Rich Silverstein is very selective with his rationale about appropriation. He failed to mention that Richard Prince has been sued successfully in civil court by the artists’ whose work he has appropriated. Check out what the photographer of the iconic Marlboro campaign has to say about Prince.

Andy Warhol stated clearly that when he used other people’s work in his screenprints, he never signed his work. The only work he signed was when he used his own photographs.
Jeff Koons was successfully sued for taking someone else’s sculpture of a family on a bench and recreating it in his name and making a motza out of it.
At last year’s Sulman Prize, the winning artist Sam Jinks was roundly criticised for having repainted (with a slight tweak) a 19th C painting without attribution to the original painter, which is the un-official artist protocol in these cases.
It is clear that neither popular nor professional opinion favours the convenient, selective and dated concept of appropriation.
Just read the daily condemnations on this blog of work that’s been ripped off someone else or more slyly plagiarised..
This is the best comment ever in the history of advertising blogs:
“Let me summarize the comment section of this and all the other threads in this site and other ad blogs so you won’t have to bother reading.
Goodby is a hack. W+K are hacks, little agencies hacks. Award winning agencies are hacks, whoever we’re talking about is a cokehead and a dick. This is ripped off from somewhere. You’re all unemployed hacks in your mom’s basement. YOU, yes YOU reading this, are a hack too. All work sucks except what I do, but you’ll never know ’cause you don’t know who I am. I do Cannes winning work 24 hrs a day, but Cannes is a hack fest, except when I win.
What else? Someone else not mentioned in my previous paragraph is also a hack. Except me.
That pretty much sums it up.”
Pure Genius.
I really like it.
You can’t bullshit your way out of a moral contradiction no matter how eloquently you do it.

That is a ballsy steal. A global creative agency. Designing their logo. Then they trace someones work. Unbelievable. Love the original. Disgusted at the copy.
I always thought it looked dated. And as it turns out, it is.
I must say though, this is a pretty boring story and pretty bitchy. Is CB turning into NW magazine?
