A revolution in advertising took place in New York in the 1960s led by Doyle Dane Bernbach. Mike Doyle ~ no relation to Ned Doyle ~ author of this new book A Sinner’s Tale of the Second Oldest Profession, chronicles the period, a few years later, when London, inspired by the creative revolution in New York, led the world in creative advertising.

In the 1960s people in the US were seeing, for the first time, advertising that didn’t insult their intelligence and was also often witty and entertaining.

Brilliant campaigns were seen for Volkswagen, Avis, Polaroid, Jamaica and the list goes on and on.

Other agencies followed DDB, producing great work.

The wind of change blew many of these companies across the Atlantic to London, which had its own claim to fame with the creation of Collett, Dickenson, Pearce (CDP).

By the 1970s, CDP was acknowledged as producing the best advertising in the world.

Many new creative agencies opened, producing work that the public actually enjoyed and had huge success in the marketplace.

Call it the luck of the Irish, or being in the right place at the right time, but Mike Doyle ended up working for many of these agencies, and for some of the legends of the business.

During those 45 years he produced many award-winning campaigns that also proved to be best-sellers.

In his new book, Doyle, who emigrated to Australia in 1990, gives his unique insights into some of these outstanding advertising talents with behind-the-scenes stories. All the time having, as US ad legend Jerry Della Femina says, “the most fun you can have with your clothes on.”

“Cathy and I went through this book and it brought back the times when advertising was great. I thought I knew who did everything, but there were lots of surprises in here.” – Dave Trott, creative director, copywriter and author
