Renegade Films founders Joe and Ken Connor, along with Alex West, head of Renegade’s factual department, met Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Monday at a ceremony for the 2012 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards in Canberra.

The team at Renegade behind the documentary series ‘Immigration Nation: The Secret History of Us’ was nominated in the prestigious Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History. The 3 x 1 hr documentary series made for SBS explores Australia’s untold immigration story; the century long struggle to build a multicultural society.

Regarding the Renegade documentary being shortlisted for the prize, the judges made the following comments; “This fine documentary series brings this body of scholarship to a wide audience in an accessible but rigorous form… ‘Immigration Nation’ achieves an admirable balance between narrative drive, engaging human stories, and critical insights, all told within a visually compelling format. Coupled with a highly innovative website which allows viewers to interact more closely with historical material and construct their own narratives, this is a landmark documentary series.”

Held annually, the PM’s Literary Awards celebrate the contribution of Australian Literature to the nation’s cultural and intellectual life.

It is another example of Renegade pushing the boundaries in terms of content and style and producing innovative work across multiple platforms, including commercials, commissioned light entertainment and drama, documentary and factual production as well as the development of online programs.
