Curious Film screens ‘Toomelah’ in cinemas nationally from Thursday 24th November
Curious is proud to announce that Toomelah launches in cinemas nationally on November 24.
Toomelah is a film about a young Aboriginal boy set in the remote Indigenous community of Toomelah. It reveals the challenges facing the Gamilaroi people, robbed of much of their traditional culture by Government policy.
Provocative yet “raw, intimate and laced with mob humour”, the film made its debut at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, where it made the Official selection (Un Certain Regard). Toomelah also made the Official Selection – In Competition – at the 2011 Sydney Film Festival.
Directed by Ivan Sen, Toomelah features a remarkable performance from 10 year-old Daniel Connors (pictured above with Denieka Connors), who befriends a local gang leader and finds himself caught in a rivalry between another rival gangster who returns from jail to reclaim his turf. A showdown ensues and Daniel is caught in the middle, leaving him with a choice to make about his uncertain future.
Daniel was nominated for Best Actor at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2011 for his debut performance.
