Dame Edna and Barry Humphries star in Qantas Business Class campaign via Ogilvy, Sydney
Qantas, via Ogilvy Sydney, has launched a business class tactical sales campaign featuring Barry Humphries and alter ego Dame Edna.
The campaign launched on the weekend and promotes a special Qantas business class offer that allows Australians to access a highly discounted fare if they buy two of more seats.
This latest Qantas campaign follows the airline’s ‘Dallas Returns’ campaign via M&C Saatchi, Sydney which featured JR Ewing and Sue Ellen (played by Larry Hagman and Linda Gray) from ‘Dallas’ to promote the airlines new services to Dallas Fort Worth.
The five day campaign will run across press, radio, digital advertising, direct marketing and B2B collateral.

The M&C Dallas one had an idea.
7.02pm …Yeah if you call a pun an idea.
fun.
If you have no idea, at least make it look good.
Execution looks cheap and nasty.
Well done guys, looks good.
Forget the predictable bile from the ever present Ogilvy hater club…it’s getting fucking boring.
It looks cheap and nasty because it’s a Qantas plane. Could of been worse. Jetstar. Oh dear.
It’s just another in a string of awful ads for Qantas. Virgin have lifted the bar, and they just can’t (or won’t) keep up.
Poor form Ogilvy.
I strongly suspect that Barry Humphries and Dame Edna are one and the same person.
Could have, 9:31. It’s could HAVE. Oh dear.
It was done better 10 years ago for Toyota Avalon.
11:20, That you Monty?
she/he dwarfs the seat!
I’ve noticed that this Ogilvy release is in marked contrast to the one actually running, the one with prices all over it.
Why’s the plane empty?
Fuck off 11.12.
9.31.
(I’m an junior art director.)
8:42, I don’t think people hate Ogilvy, I think they hate that Ogilvy and especially its management PR and press release everything they do. These guys press release coupons and banner ads.
And a junior you will remain, 9:31/12:25. An junior art director, to quote your own illiteracy back to you. Not that that wasn’t blindingly obvious.
Enough indignation.
Each of these Anonymous comments epitomises why this industry has a mad reputation.
There should be more supporting comments instead of slandering ones.
As an aspiring advertising junior I surf through this blog.
These type of malicious comments from “Anonymous” people are damaging creative talent and set an extremely poor example for ambitious juniors. In my opinion they are inconsequential and provide no positive advice or beneficial commentary.
Grow up and get back to work.
Nic. You ‘re not a junior. Look at your grammar.it’s good.
Advertising is a communications medium.
If you want to work in it, learn to communicate.
If you want to be taken seriously in a medium which uses words only (comments) then take the time to check your spelling and grammar. It’s not impossible even if it seems beyond you at times.
Geez… Tom at M&C loves ads with celebs, doesn’t he? Bet this got approved in a heartbeat.
@ 11:10 “Anonymous”
I’m not sure what exactly you’re trying to communicate.
Who are you directing your comment too?
11:18
Tom had nothing to do with this.
It was an Ogilvy ad that just so happened to be identical to the one M&C did.
And just for the record, the ad above is now suspiciously without the huge pink prices that ran in the papers yesterday.
@11:40
I’m sure you meant ‘To whom are you directing your comment?’
While we’re at it, it’s it time to put this Australian habit of celebrating old cross dressers to bed? Figuratively of course.
where’s the head job shot, barry sucking edna or edna sucking barry
The idea is simple and clever . Take your better half . Barry Humphries with his Alter ego Dame Edna. Nice work guys
Nice job on offering a bottle of champagne to a reformed alcoholic, QANTAS.
Nic, you’re thick. I’m sure the comment was a general one directed at all those too lazy or too cool to express themselves in clear English. A few have exposed their incompetence spectacularly on this thread.
Fuck off 7.08. You must be a prize tosser.
Hey Nic. Bitch slap yourself.
The intended audience for my ‘communications’ comment is self-selecting. Generally, if it gives you the shits it’s probably meant for you.
The point is not simply to be a smart-arse. It’s that you cannot fool yourself into thinking that English language will adapt to your unwillingness to use it properly.
If you do, at some point, you will realise that you have blunt tools in your mental workshop and it is going to hold you back.
We all of us make mistakes. I’m sure there’s more than a few in this post. The lack of effort to adhere to even the basic forms of correct English usage is so obvious however that it’s not a matter of typos, it’s an issue of actual failure to communicate.
While your message might be, “I think blah, blah, blah…”, if you misspell think and put no commas after the ‘blah’s then your the clearest comment will be, “I’m stoopid’.
If I’ve posted this twice is because of this @&$^£#! iPhone.
Yes 10:19, I am a prize tosser. I’ve won lots of prizes for my work, mostly because it started with a strong idea and was well-written.
If the idea is to make business class look appealing, why does she look like she’s been crammed into a rather thin seat?
And why’s there nobody else in the plane?
They normally use jockeys and gymnasts to shoot these airline seat ads, not tall dudes in drag. Now I see why.
True 10.45, you should have seen the jockey’s we used to put in car ads to make the cars look bigger and roomier than they were.
