International Advertising Association in Australia unveils 2011 ‘Big Idea’ challenge university competition to support Coeliac Australia
The International Advertising Association (IAA) in Australia has launched its ‘Big Idea’ marketing communications competition for 2011. In its ninth year, the initiative is designed to foster the talent of students planning to enter the communications industry.
As part of the IAA’s on-going commitment to education and professional development, the annual IAA ‘Big Idea’ competition invites students from universities and tertiary institutions nationwide to form teams and lend their creative brains to create a marketing communications plan for a non-profit organisation.
This year’s client is Coeliac Australia, an organisation that aims to enhance the quality of life of people with Coeliac Disease and those medically diagnosed as requiring a gluten free diet for life.
Coeliac disease affects one in 100 Australians. Currently, seventy-five percent of sufferers remain undiagnosed, meaning that almost 200,000 Australians have the disease without even knowing it. In people with coeliac disease, the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten causing small bowel damage. A number of serious health consequences can result if the condition is not diagnosed and treated properly.
The student award competition is designed to challenge students to work in agency-style teams to devise innovative, integrated concepts that will increase public awareness and improve diagnostic rates of the disease.
Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of respected industry professionals and representatives of Coeliac Australia. Three teams will be shortlisted as finalists. On November 14, the winning team and ‘National Champions’ will be decided following the completion of a final presentation to the client and judging panel. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the presentations.
Expressions of interest to enter for University and Tertiary institutes student teams:

Good. Coeliac disease isn’t as sexy a research field as, say, cancer and has been neglected until fairly recently. As another person who’s probably bored with people waving sourdough bread under his nose and slurping beers in front of him I’m sure Mick Hunter would agree.
