Visa promotes PayWave card with remake of US spot via Whybin\TBWA\Tequila, Sydney

Whybin\TBWA\Tequila, Sydney has put to air a spot to promote Visa’s PayWave card, for purchases under $100, which is almost a remake of this Visa Check Card spot from late 2007 created by sister shop TBWA\Chiat\Day, Los Angeles.
The Aussie remake was directed by Nicholas Reynolds via 8Com. The US agency also created this spot, this spot and this spot in the same series.

So visa turns us all into robots with absolute no need for social interaction. How wonderful.
How very unoriginal of them. Not that good anyway.
None of the charm or timing of the chiat day spot and very ordinary casting.
Don’t worry whybins, it’s almost impossible to do a remake as good as the original, especially one which would have had a big budget.
10:22. Bless.
All the sweet innocence of a creative who hasn’t been as jaded as us sad fucks.
Next month will mark the first anniversary of the ousting of Garry Horner, who had a very successful four years at whybins, both creatively and in terms of business. Now, it may be just me, but has anyone else noticed that not much great work has come out of whybins sydney ever since? Or if I’m wrong, can anyone point to any work I may have missed.
Interesting point Garry.
I thought Gazza resigned?
why didn’t they just run the US one? the new one isn’t as good. i’m sure there was something the visa client thought was “too american” that no one else in their right mind would notice
1:58, I doubt it was gaz making the comment, probably one of his old team. But the point is, at AWARD I don’t think the new guys at Whybin Sydney got a mention, did they? However, Cannes will be a fairer test of a full year’s work so wait till then critics.
I’m sure the U.S. spots worked well for Visa over there, they will have been researched here and have been told they felt too American, but were o.k, so Whybins would have bee told to re-shoot them here. There are many upsides to having big internationally aligned accounts, this, i’m afraid, is one of the downsides.
I bet Matt and Dave miss the speed of getting great work out the door they enjoyed at Droga5 and Saatchi’s respectively.

How could you be so blind as to have overlooked the obvious? They had to reshoot the spot in order to get the beetroot on to the sandwich for the Aussie audience.
When will you creative types learn to think from a client’s perspective? This marketing stuff is a science, don’t you know.
Look, Nick and his crew at 8 made a little money last month, Matt and Dave put some cash through Scott’s bank account, and the agency and production company had a 1 minute walk to get to one another’s offices in Pyrmont for those crucial pre-production meetings to decide where to sprinkle the ethnic types for politically correct ‘balance’, mostly behind the serving counters as it turned out (big surprise, I mean Australia is a multi-cultural society, right?), and of course the crucial detail of how thin to slice the beetroot. I can just hear the conversations on the set between the suit and the client now.
Come on all you protest kids, This Is Advertising.
Quitscherbellyaykin.
The biggest mistake WTBWA made was not keeping Gary Horner.
I mean look at the work that’s coming out?
Nuf zed.
visa paywave – go be a robot
in the old days the guy with the coins would have been the hero
Yes it’s all very silly and camp, but it does make the point that the person paying with cash is holding up the works and is, ironically, the odd man out. Whether it’s remake or not is irrelevant. It does a serviceable job in communicating the benefit of this new type of credit card to the great unwashed, and encouraging them to get with the program. And as much as you might not like to hear this, that’s the business we’re in, kids.
So, you lot are judging the success or failure of Matty and Dave’s tenure by how well 8 reshot an overseas ad for 1/8 the budget the original cost ( just a guess).
Tough audience.
Personally, I think Whybins under the old regime did some good stuff – like ASCA, Rabo and some of the Herald things.
Under the new regime, they have also done some good stuff – like the Domain spot, the guy lending his car for NRMA and the new NRMA spots about not having a car that were on b&t.
So it is a wash.
Garry can possibly feel aggrieved by the output so far, but you all might like to recall how long it took for the first cool stuff to come out of Droga and Matty for VB, and the yawning gap between Bowman’s good stuff at Saatchi for Toyota and Tooheys and the previous good ads for these brands.
I realise it is fashionable for some to slag off Whybins (and that Bear Grills ad deserves it), and for others with an axe to grind to slag off M&D, but a year is not a long time and the jury should still be out.
Shitloads of new business wins. Couple of nice campaigns to boot. Office expanding faster than Charlie Sheen’s twitter followers. Shitty adapt that a production company probably decided to put on the blog.
Who the fuck cares about the last CD? These guys are creating jobs for people. Good jobs.
Enough chin-scratching.
Is Doddsy still there? Bueller? Anyone?
crap copy. looks cheap
