Ash Bolland’s curious global campaign for Viva
Curious has released five new works by Ash Bolland, finalist at last week’s Shots New Directors Award.
The global campaign for Viva music channel in Germany was created in conjunction with directors from around the world. The five graphic films – ‘Crash’, ‘Fire’, ‘Space’, ‘Window’ and ‘Crystal’ – capture the feeling of being ‘young at heart’.
The first TVC, ‘Fire’, is about capturing the feeling that anything ispossible when young at heart. It’s Vimeo’s staff pick this week.
In ‘Crash’, the film depicts the raw passion of a young couple’s lust. A girl hurtles herself towards a young man, colliding in a detailed explosion of smoke and rock shards.
“The brief called for five strong, films that are confident, beautiful, and capture the feeling of young adulthood, so I tried to choose simple bold ideas that will stay with you after the clip is finished,” says Bolland.
Bolland was a finalist at the Shots New Director Award with his spots for MTV, ‘Genetically Modified HD’, which communicated MTV Europe’s new HD channel by virtue of its detail and complexity.

Beautiful!
fresh

different.
Stunning work. What’s the track for crash?
Wow, more GenYers on vfx fire, and a boy and girl running to collision with explosions too! How edgy. Haven’t seen that in a week or two.
Spike and Glazer did it way back when and Garth felt he had to reinterpret it with Coke, but again? At least Ash’s referencing great talent, and I guess that crystal thingy was original. But why?
There’s a real talent here, and everyone borrows, but with such inventive work on his website http://www.ashbolland.com, the HBO idents and a few of the MTV spots, PRing this derivative work seems like a real mistake.
Fire is the new black!
It’s only ‘fresh’ 4:57, and ‘different’ 5:07 if you just landed on the planet. ‘Beautiful’ 4:51? Probably.
Too bad it’s so short! nicely polished and deliciously good!
new energy
its up not down
that’s the difference
Ash is such a great guy who has an incredibly fresh and stylistic approach to all his work.
5:28, I think the comments were in reference to craft, rather than idea. There’s a difference.
give me a break.
thank you for posting something that isn’t painful to watch. the work on this blog has been pretty grim recently.
The Germans would have liked that explosion. It’s very sexy.
