The Craft: Sixty40 animates American Express cinema spots for Ogilvy & Mather Sydney
Sixty40 was briefed by Ogilvy & Mather, Sydney to animate two 15-second cinema spots to promote American Express card offerings.
Sixty40 was the first company outside Addadog (Kuntzel & Deygas) in France to be asked to extend the established handmade, cut-out 2d style into a delicious 3D animation for cinema.
The first spot, ‘Helicopter’ takes inspiration from massive flyover shots, from movies such as Cliffhanger, to reveal a group of letters living their dream of heli-skiing in the Alps by utilising the power of the American Express Platinum Series.
‘Dandelion’ reveals hundreds of tiny airplanes being blown dislodged from a field of dandelion flowers. In one continuous camera move we travel from a grassy paddock, into a subtly choreographed release of travelling airplanes then out to show people watching in Gold Class seats in the cinema.
Created at 2K resolution Combined with Dolby Surround Sound the aim is to create a big cinematic feeling in these highly stylised, simple feeling spots.

Isn’t it interesting that no matter how many creatives Ogilvy churns through, how much money they throw at ECDs or how much they talk up their staff, Nothing. Ever. Changes. They go in talented and enthusiastic, they get spat out the other end bitter and frustrated with nothing to show for it.
Ogilvy… the home of the cheapest option…
All the craft in the world means nuthin’ when the idea is shit.
The trouble with AMEX is that it is a very expensive card to use.
A few cartoons will not change the loss of market share.
Address the problems.

Wow… There’s some really bitter hacks on this thread.
woah, dudes.
Well done Sixty40, nice work.
The press release had me excited, underwhelmed to say the least. Not sure this should be on the reel let alone singing and dancing about it.
