Help ‘Type-Hoes’ compile pictorial, typographic record of various type and signage in Sydney

A trio of typographers and type enthusiasts, Mick Tonello, Baz Beckley and Ross MacKenzie have got together for a project highlighting all the wonderful type and signage in and around Sydney. This new triumvirate call themselves the ‘Type-Hoes’. They are currently compiling a pictorial, typographic record of various type and signage in Sydney.

Says the trio: “With progress comes change. Change in techniques have altered the way we approach and create type. With that, will come new and exciting looks and techniques for creating signage and architectural typography. But with change, there can also come a loss. A loss of the skills involved form people that could create type by hand. These craftsmen and women are already now few and far between. This is why we need to make a record whilst their work is still visible and before changes in landscape, architecture and planning allows them to fade away.

“So we have started a to create this piece of history. A social and visual history. One that can be looked on by generations to come.

“Our intention is simple. To create a visual, digital library of type and signs in Sydney and its suburbs. But we need your help.

“We are asking for people to go out and take photos of any interesting typography or signage in their suburbs. Both old and new. They can then be uploaded to a facebook community page called “Sydney’s type” that has been set up for this purpose. People can create Albums of each suburb in which they photographed in or, they can add to existing ones.

They’ll be kept there for all future viewers to view how type and signage looked in Sydney in the early 21st Century.
