A Tasmanian-shaped corn chip idea makes Cronulla’s Alex George $29,000 richer in the Dorito’s ‘Make an Ad, Make a Fortune’ competition
Alex George, 21 of Cronulla NSW tonight won the Doritos’ Make an Ad, Make a Fortune competition. The winning ad was revealed on prime time TV and tells the story of a young Aussie, who will back anything Australian, including Tasmanian-shaped corn chips.
The winning spot scored Alex close to $30,000 in prize money. As part of the prize, the winning commercial received national exposure when it was aired during the commercial break of tonight’s Good News Week program.
“My mates and I had a great time filming the ad. I’m stoked thatAustralia voted it as their favourite, especially considering the toughcompetition!”, says George.
George took the top spot from Maik Hempel of Melbourne, for his adWelcome to Fantasy Corn Chip Island and David Williams of DoncasterEast’s for Doritos Beatboxer.
In August, the judging panel, including comedian Merrick Watts, actress, writer and directorMatilda Brown, and Clemenger BBDO Sydney joint ECDs Paul Nagy and Michael Spirkovski, whittled down over 1,350 entries to just three. Controlwas then handed over to the Australian public to select their ultimatefavourite.
Says Brown: “The top three ads were all exceptionalbut there can only be one winner. Alex’s ad is clever, fun, doesn’ttake itself too seriously and has great characters. This is Alex’s bigbreak; I wish him all the best and a big congratulations.”
Thisis the second year that Doritos has handed creative control over to theAustralian public and invited imaginative minds, film fanatics, aspiring advertising creatives and those who just love their home videocamera to come up with the next TV ad for Doritos.

It’s a good ad. Good campaign too.
Go the Shire!
i saw it and immediately thought it was fake. did they re-shoot the entry? cool idea but unfortunately seemed over polished for what was supposed to be a user generated ad.
not sure. yeah but no but….
Great ad. Well done guys.
Winning a comp- what a great way to get a creative ad through without research!
If it was done through an agency we would be watching a whole bunch of Dorito munching groups behind a window telling us how shit all our ads are.
I can also see a campaign. The talent is really good.
Feels very polished for the user entry which makes me think the guy either has mates in film or TV or the agency has done it. Either way, don’t think it really matters, it’s still a cute ad that made me smile.
Yep. Pretty slick. Hope it’s kosher.
Like the corn chip itself: gold.
Nicely done.
So do the creative directors get to put it on their reel?
I studied film with alex at university, so pretty sure he put this together himself! he’s extremely talented and this script screams of his personality. congratulations, alex!
Nothing’s more entertaining than a Mapatasi…
There was nothing in the comp guidelines to say you could not enter if you were in the industry what so ever, so not sure what you are on about it looking to polished. Spielberg could have entered if he so wished. Good spot fella’s.
Nice one!
But to those commenters who think this is too professional to be user-generated, can I suggest you buy yourself a Canon 7D, a copy of iMovie and a fucking clue?
Welcome to 2010 dinosaurs.
2:17: Fail.
It’s fellas. What’s with this epidemic of apostrophes before the letter ‘s’?
It’s been said before but let me say it again.
It’s a great vehicle for young talent to get some exposure but it’s also the cheapest way a client can get an ad (many ads) made and get some exposure – which fundamentally undermines the advertising and production community who loose all opportunity to work for that client and get payed for that creative skill.
A nice idea. Production and performance OK, but it doesn’t raise any bars.
Discuss.
This ad raised my bar. Discuss that.
4.14, I reckon only the most sensitive ad people should get upset about this. At the end of the day, the client and agency had to wade through thousands of shit ads before they got to this one. I don’t think we need to worry about the TV production process being replaced entirely by user-generated advertising
Whoever did this, dude this is fucking great. Really good humour, well casted, well acted as well. Loved it.
No ‘big idea’ but hell, would beat the pants off what most agencies do for Doritos. And pretty decent production values as well.
You should enter this into a few shows, ruffle a few austrayans.
I guess two heads are always better than one…
Hey The Grammar, Spelling & Punctuation Police can you also add spelling ‘lose’ as ‘loose’ to your list of idiot activities? Thanks bra.
Before i voice my opinion i’d like to know what the focus groups thought of the animatic.
For all y’all that thinks this is too polish here’s a heads up:
7d = yes, Worst kit lens used, no lighting whatsoever, not even fleckies, really pooey tripod…like really bad, you can see the camera shaking in the sports segment. So yeah, only clever use of available light, exposure adjustment & tweaked col temp…the budget went to 6 bags of doritos…beat that… High five!
