Engine Group wins pitch for Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games bid branding
Brisbane-based Engine Group has won a competitive pitch to develop the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid branding.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh today unveiled the bid logo (left) which features vibrant colours symbolising the energy and excitement that is the Gold Coast.
Ms Bligh was joined by athletes Lyndsie Fogarty, Alex Beck, Sara Carrigan, Dylan Grant, Morgan McCallister, and Otis Gowa who unzipped their tracksuits to reveal the new logo.
“This logo captures the energy of the Gold Coast in a blast of colour,” Ms Bligh said.
Gold Coast Members threw their full support behind the new logo.Tourism Minister and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said: “Thisshows we mean business and its full steam ahead for our bid.”
Mayor of the Gold Coast, Ron Clarke agreed that the logo embodies thepeople and the excitement on the Gold Coast: “When you’ve got theQueensland ‘x’ factor like the Gold Coast, flaunt it and that’s whatour bid team are doing,” said Clarke.
Queensland will formally submit a bid in May 2011 with the host city to be announced in November 2011.
Ms Bligh said it was important to get the logo out front and centre nowwith the first opportunity to really push the Gold Coast less than twomonths away: “The Commonwealth Games Federation will hold its GeneralAssembly in Delhi, India on October 2, the day before the Games begin, and the cities bidding for 2018 have been invited to make apresentation,” Ms Bligh said.
“First impressions count and this will be our first formal opportunityto spell out just why the Gold Coast is the ideal location for the 2018Commonwealth Games,” Ms Bligh said.

As someone who has spent a bit of time on the Gold Coast, I believe it’s an appropriate choice to host these games. There’s already an awful lot of common wealth there.
nice work Lisa and Shane! woooo yeah!
Logo looks great. As well as the vibrant colours with the dots there is a connection to indigenous art, which I really like. – very subtle.
I hope this bid gets up, because it would be awesome to have the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and get world wide coverage for this great spot in Queensland.

Great work guys! Go Lisa & Shane!
Lovely work Shane and Lisa, you rock 🙂
worse than a first year design school project.
But hey, I’m from melbourne, the design capital of australia.
Wow is it the 2018 Mardi Games?
The handle looks like they have stolen it from a 1950’s logo the top looks completely separate the “mardi gras” explosion.
Sorry not a fan at all – looks like the work of a year 10 student, I hope it’s the clients fault it looks the way it is…
That has got to be one of the worst logos I have ever seen.
7:49 – Really? Australia square?
Masturbation does not equal design.
9:31 im pretty sure the ‘handle’ is a compulsory element. i actually think its quite nice compared to other previous logos!
reduce the shit 20% to fit the strip ads the government buys over the next 8 years and see how it holds up
ummmmm
This Technicolor yawn seems to be inspired by the footpaths outside most Surfers Paradise nightclubs on any given weekend.
Has anyone seen their upside down Sunshine Coast billboard on the Bruce highway?
Surely that should be considered a health hazard.
This is very disappointing considering the outstanding design talent that is readily available in Brisbane. The logo is dated and I think a great opportunity has been missed for Brisbane designers.
“Way to go, Idaho” insert brissvegas 🙂
Good job Teneale. You’re a rockstar in waiting. And congrats to the whole Engine team… another win!

Sorry, but it reminds me of logo for a box of crayons or a clown wig.
So I guess it’s perfect for the Gold Coast!
Would have been nice for a Gold Coast based company to have designed this and captured a ‘real’ feel of the coast. This means nothing.
