Patts Sydney tasked to reinvent the Wagon Wheel via ‘Random But Right’ integrated campaign
George Patterson Y&R Sydney has re-launched Arnott’s classic Wagon Wheel by bringing back the ‘inventors’ of the iconic snack, the Wagon Wheels Product Innovation Team.
The agency has set out to inject fresh life into the brand and engage a new audience of young male snackers with the positioning, Random But Right, in a fully integrated national campaign.
“We noted the propensity for young people to rediscover the past and make old-school things cool again,” says GPY&R Sydney planning director Moensie Rossier.
“This revival is apparent, for instance, in the return of DunlopVolleys and the renewed cachet of vinyl records. In today’s web 3.0,iPad, five-dollar-flavoured-water obsessed culture, consumers arealways looking for innovation. We also tapped into our audience’s loveof things quirky, random and even slapstick. They are very marketingaware and enjoy parodying their own pop culture,” says Rossier.
Thewinning reinvention will win a random but right $8008 and an honoraryplace on the Product Innovation Team. Further prizes include items fromthe team’s storeroom, like Donkey Kong Games, Star Wars memorabilia, acalculator watch and even a Phil Collins 1983 “No Jacket Required” tourjacket.
The campaign is being exploded across outdoor, print,point-of-sale, online and social media, including viral videos, on-linegames, Facebook and Twitter.
“Wagon Wheel hasn’t been supported for years. We discovered thattoday’s 20-somethings have a strong connection to the brand from theirchildhood, so we are taking the opportunity to reignite their passionin a way that is really relevant,” says Nicole Stanners, groupmarketing manager of chocolate at Arnotts.

did not. crack a smile.
oooo I love the feeling of jam between my toes……random….
Jumping on the bandwagon wheel.
Can’t see anyone giving a fuck let alone laughing at this.
Terrible
Still think volley warehouse was the funniest campaign this year
Funny and random. Nice work alex & ant.
the best thing to come out of patts Sydney in years, and on arnotts as well so degree of difficulty would have been high.
well done
Full of its own propensity.
All the juveniles who mock this work overlook the salient point: Wagon Wheels are a daggy but much-loved iconic Australian confectionary, and this work wisely and correctly acknowledges that. In the world of the super-efficient fudge and nut infested chocolate bar, Wagon Wheels have always been a slightly stale, second-rate poor-man’s treat with cheap chocolate coating, but that’s part of its charm. It’s not the confectionary of choice for the supercool AB demographic, such as the wankers with very little wisdom, knowledge or experience – but supreme self-belief – who infest today’s advertising agencies.
Feel free to disagree of course if you’re under 26 and presume to know everything but know nothing about anything.
Seen this many, many times before.
Can we please have a moratorium on the whole ‘random-creepy-weird-guy-in-a-skivvy’ styling?
I’ve had it up to my polyester turtle neck with this tired old, try-hard, brown scale, retro-fication of everything.
It’s standard-issue Archive art direction from 10 years ago and has really been done to death.
no, didn”t enjoy that i’m afraid.
daggy. in a good way.

kinda familiar?
Nice one J. Kinda BORING. I love exploding sheep and graph paper… Where has all the graph paper got to?
Painful
It’s a pretty long 3 minutes or so of video. Comedy, hard to do. Especially if you are trying to be funny.
Why would you want to re-invent Wagon Wheels? Why? Why!?!?!??!?
This is just soo bad at trying to be random, it feels like someone is trying a little too hard. (Person shall remain nameless)
I love Wagon Wheels just the way they are. Dont ruin this for me.
Shame, Mr Watts, Shame!
Trying very hard. Failing very easy.
…um…iSnackwheel…?
3.12pm….um…..f-wit>?
random shite
they’d be better off with a buy 1 get 1 free deal
Funny in spots, exploding sheep was also a highlight for me.
Re-inventing the wagon wheel is a nice thought too.
Random…… but right
You are all tossers. Watts, Brown and The Situation rock.
4:36….strike a nerve did we?
Yawn. I love a wagon wheel but this would not get me back into buying one. Shame as there is so much potential here.
Nice one Jules and co!
a good step in the right direction. A massive step forward for Arnotts.
Tick. Got me thinkin’ about ’em again.,
