The United States of Australian advertising
![]()
Back in the 70s and 80s it was the Brits taking over Australian advertising – now it looks like it is the Americans, with an influx of U.S. executive creative directors in the past few years.
Four of Australia’s leading ad agencies now have Americans at the creative helm and The Commonwealth Bank has been the subject of much controversy since it appointed US-based agency, Goodby Silverstein & Partners to its account.
1. Ogilvy & Mather Sydney has hired Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco creative director Chris Ford (above left), who will relocate mid-July as ECD.
2. Franklin Tipton (above right) became the creative director of Publicis Mojo Melbourne earlier this year from Goodby Silverstein & Partners where he was ECD on Sprint and Zynga.

3. U.S. born Micah Walker (far left) is the ECD at Publicis Mojo Sydney. He joined the agencyin 2007 from Fallon London where he was a creative director. Prior toFallon, Walker was CD at Leo Burnett Sydney.
4. Andy DiLallo (above right) is the ECD of Leo Burnett Sydney – a role he originallyshared with fellow American Jay Benjamin, who returned to the US inDecember 2009. They joined Leo Burnett Sydney as joint executivecreative directors in April 2008, lured from the joint ECD roles at JWTSydney. DiLallo originally came to Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney, hired from Bozell New York by then ECD David Nobay.
Australia is also proving to be a popular choice among South African creatives with three agencies appointing South Africans to the creative helm.

1. Julian Watt (far left), joined George Patterson Y&R, Sydney as ECD this year. He first came to Australia in 2008 to join 303 Sydney as ECD from Net#work BBDO, Johannesburg in his native South Africa.
3. The Campaign Palace, Melbourne hired South African team,Gerhard Myburgh and Brent Liebenberg (above centre), as joint creativedirectors from November 2008 until May 2010, when they resigned. Thepair joined from Draft FCB, one of the top three creative agencies inSouth Africa, where Myburgh served as executive creative director withLeibenberg as his writer and CD.
3 In May this year, Lowe Sydney hired South African Mike Barnwell (above right) as its new executive creative director. Barnwell was most recently ECD of Grey South Africa, based in Johannesburg.

Not sure if you’re implying this is good, bad, or is it just a statement? But, Australia – so welcoming. Similar to your treatment of your indigenous people.
Strategic business decision to get the Combank back into Ogilvy..
very smart
Those American’s take a nice humble photo don’t they.
USA was also the best country overall at cannes this year.
Bloody good having a few overseas heads in the big jibs, if it wasn’t for them aussie advertising would still be all jingles and ockerfied shit.
Yep 7:22. David Droga was the king of jingles and ockerfield shit until he went overseas.
*cough* *australia is the new florida* *cough*
The US has stuffed this country up big time, not only on the product & marketing front but also on the creative front. This has been happening for the last 15 / 20years
Get real….get really good ideas to do these guys over.
Who is placing these guys? Not Australians.!
Stand your ground Australia.
USA -50 AUS-0
Of course their companies will still take the money made and move it overseas. who is the looser?
Think again brothers and sisters.
This is a real concern, you should TAKE ACTION NOW.
Good luck at Ogilvy’s Ross.
Well, In New Zealand all the top agencies have Brits as their ECD’s…so yea, what’s new.
Dave droga was the king of winning awards for his fathers friends shop. He was smart enough to see that awards were being given out like candy for any client and that was the path to success in advertising.
Not that he needs to do it anymore but Droga was the godfather of scam.
Nice to see that advertising folk here in Australia are as parochial and racist as ever. Stop living in fear.
You all act surprised? Look at the advertising education systems in place in the UK and US. Advertising courses (1-3 years) and portfolio schools are in abundance.
What do we have? 12 weeks at AWARD School.
Go figure.
This is not an issue.
Americans, Brits, who cares? Anyone with talent and can make a contribution is welcome in my book. Nev heard the Poms or Yanks complaining about the Aussies working there.
First they take your biggest banking client, now they’re taking your jobs. Next up, your anal virginity.
Hey 4.55pm – don’t know if you are from USA or Sth Africa – either way, you are hardly in any position to throw stones at the “treatment of our indigenous people” – and don’t compare yourself to this society’s “poorly treated” minorities – you are soft, fat well paid imports and you live in a different Australia to them. Keep your social commentary to yourself and stick to making commercials.
And your point, Lynchy is?
Australia has always had an inferiority complex and has always imported talent.
It’s bloody unAustralian.
In a good way.
Oh thankgod some new imports. I’m at the point of writing to immigration about the number of poms that have been dumped at our doorstep. If I hear one more fxcking time “in the uk we …..” Just shut up – don’t you realise we hate you!
Where are you from? The country that hosed down black slaves in the street while handing out crack and alcohol to rounded up Indians on reservations? Or did you jump over here when your indigenous population got so many guns they rose against your apartheid rule in terrible violence?
Or the mother-superior country that spread small-pox through blankets to the indigenous populations of New Zealand, Australia and India because they weren’t considered muscular enough to be used as slaves?
In the last century, Australia made a terrible mistake. They wanted Aboriginals to have the same tools to get ahead as regular Australians – education and ‘decent’ upbringing. They thought they could bridge the gap by doing what ultimately became the terrible situation of the stolen generation. While it was well intentioned, it was very poorly thought out.
About the same time, 9 million* Jews, homosexuals, handicapped or ‘physically unfit’ people were rounded up and raped, experimented on while still alive, forced into labour camps and gassed or burnt.
And that was just in one tiny part of Europe. Russia killed approximately 20 million* Jewish people. Then we have China, Cambodia and…
There’s probably no point in continuing this thread.
*Figure varies in history books
whoa whoa whoa take it down a notch, 1:11. this is campaign brief.
