Portfolio Night 8: Participant perspective
MELBOURNE – Portfolio Night 8 (lead up previously reported by CB) was held last night in the upstairs bar at Honey in South Melbourne.
The event, hosted by Ogilvy Melbourne, gave young creatives the opportunity to show their books to a host of top CDs. One such youngster, Samantha Hunter, was on hand to give her rundown of the evening.

PORTFOLIO NIGHT 8: By Samantha Hunter.
Nervous and self conscious, was how it all began. Climbing those frightful stairs at Honey clutching our portfolios in hand, we entered a world of possibilities. And free booze. The room was filled with excited chatter and curious stares at Creative Directors willing them to go easy. Portfolio Night 8 was such a unique and privileged experience, one we were lucky to be apart of.
Showing your portfolio to a professional creative was extremely daunting. Having your heart and soul put into A3 plastic sleeves to be judged was more than scary. However, given the relaxed venue and nature of the people involved, it made for a fun and insightful night. Despite popular belief these Creative Directors were actually normal down to earth people too. They knew what it was like to have a first folio and have it torn to shreds. Their advice became small nuggets of gold that helped us question our work in a way that pushes it forward. They wanted nothing more than to make our work better and help us improve. This thought was comforting.
It was interesting to see prospective advertisers showing their work through different mediums. The classic A3 folio was a popular old school, yet suitable choice for the evening. Some students used their laptops to show their pieces and videos, which seemed to work well for them. Assuming it was charged and didn’t freeze. Most interestingly though was the students who whipped out their iphone or PSP, taking portfolio night into a new digital territory. These devices were a new way of showing off their work to Creatives. However I don’t believe the folio showing experience was enhanced in anyway. In fact, small screens in dimly lit rooms with ten measly minutes to impress may not call for needing to rely on technology.
Regardless of how work was presented though, the feedback gathered by students although ego damaging will help to build the foundations for a better Copywriter and Art Director. Take on board what you have heard from these Advertisers, decode its often cryptic meaning and apply it to your folio to make more successful pieces.
A warm and heartfelt thanks must go out to the participating Creative Directors. Getting their personal opinion and expert advice was priceless. Almost as priceless as Mastercard.

WHo got the internship?
Considering they ushered everyone out the door once their session was over it wouldn’t surprise me if no internship was awarded. A let down like that would be an excellent way of welcoming people to the industry and giving them a taste of what they can expect.
When the session before me ended, they basically told the guys thank you and get out. No after event chit chat. No following up with people. It’s almost impossible to get into see a CD yet the one great opportunity we had with them all in one room and it was over in what felt like two minutes.
It was like they wanted the kids gone so they can get stuck into the coke.
It’s pretty tuff to be trying to get into the industry at the moment, lots of juniors working for bus fare and an apple, I wonder how many talented people are being lost to other industries that don’t treat the next generation like poo.
We did not award anyone on the night but we have asked to see a few books again and expect to offer one this week.
I went along to Portfolio Night and thought it was great. The CDs were extremely welcoming and generous with their time and advice.
I am embarrassed that my peers are always so quick to criticise and bag things out (as above). I don’t understand why they are so bitter and jaded at such a young age. They are the ones that give Gen Y a bad name. We are not all like that.
Thank you Portfolio Night for giving us this great opportunity.
Add 30g of cement mix to 50ml of tap water. Pour into cup and stir.
Drink slowly and harden up pussy.
I was there. They gave us time. Yes it was tough but that’s advertising.
As the book said, “There’s always Portfolio Night 9.”
A world wide money making scam.
39 venues world wide, say 500 applicants at $10.00 each, nice little earner for someone.
