Sam Cable: Cutwater, San Francisco Diary #6
Sam Cable is a copywriting student at Miami Ad School Sydney, currently interning at top US creative ad agency Cutwater, San Francisco as part of her portfolio course.
With three weeks left of my internship, I thought this would be the perfect time to reflect on the crazy rollercoaster of a journey America has been, and share with you some of the highlights:
1. Californian weather is as indecisive as I am.
2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the only food that matters.
3. The seagulls are fat.
The purpose of this blog is to document my experiences at Cutwater. Everything from rushing towards the train through foggy, dew-lined streets to concepting ideas in the sun on ‘intern hill’ (a patch of grass outside the agency where lunch is typically eaten).
But my favourite part of contributing to Campaign Brief is the opportunity to have conversations with the top and emerging creatives of this generation. It has been fascinating listening to their stories and discover what pushes them to make meaningful work. I know these are big questions to ask – but I have always been on the ambitious side.
This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Justin Reagan, a past Miami Ad School Student about his opinion regarding agency culture and creativity.
“I want to make the stuff that influenced me – so I can influence the next generation.”
Justin started portfolio school with a background in IT sales and a talent for crafting persuasive emails. He noted one of the best experiences at Miami Ad School was the integration with real-world experiences and internships. He travelled to Hamburg to gain an international scope in creativity before being employed by Cutwater as a copywriter in November 2014.
“Internships are great because it is about finding your fit. If the place is not right for you, keep going, because when you stumble across somewhere you thrive, you can appreciate the agency culture and your fit better”.
When asked about giving advice to his younger self, Justin commented about focusing on the simplest form of the idea and executing it really well.
“Find a way to entertain me now. Entertain me quickly. Simple is good.”
