Sam Cable: Cutwater, San Francisco Diary #5
Sam Cable is a copywriting student at Miami Ad School Sydney, currently interning at top US creative ad agency Cutwater, San Francisco as part of her portfolio course.
“Be more buttoned-up than you think you are.”
This was the advice from Cutwater’s account coordinator Matt Kabus. Working in the position for the last eight months, Matt was the perfect person to ask about ‘dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s’ whilst in the San Francisco Ad Ghetto.
He studied advertising and music business at the University of Georgia before graduating and moving to Los Angeles to pursue his passion for music. Singer/songwriter, producer and actor, Matt polished his craft in music production and licensing while also coordinating an assortment of multimedia projects – a real hybrid between the creative and business-oriented mindset.
After moving to San Francisco, Matt discovered that advertising completely aligned with his experience and passion and focused solely on finding an in. The resourcefulness he solidified in project management helped secure an account coordinator position at Cutwater. His unique skillsets and experience also helped him formulate new ways of prospecting and securing new clients. Matt noted one of the major drawcards of working in an agency was the hands-on nature of the job.
“Advertising is the business of creativity – a combination that has played into much of who I am, and well, I enjoy it!”
On a final note, Matt expressed the importance of working with different-minded people, which he deems necessary in becoming a skilful communicator.

This week’s Haiku:
Be more buttoned up,
Could mean getting a new shirt.
Or just new buttons.
