Dave King’s LIA Diary from Las Vegas: Day 3
Dave King, ECD, Innocean Worldwide is Australia’s representative on the LIA TV/Cinema/Online Film jury where judging is currently taking place in Las Vegas. Here King gives us a rundown of day 3 in Las Vegas.
We had a party last night. A thank you to the judges but also to welcome the Liaison people. It’s a fantastic thing where young creatives from around the world hear sessions from the likes of Bob Isherwood and Ted Royer. They also sit in on our final day of judging to see the process we go through when evaluating and rewarding work. It was especially cool seeing the New Zealand representatives, Zoe and Kate, as Zoe interned with me at M&C Saatchi in NZ. There are actually tons of Aussies and Kiwis here so it turned out to be a rather big night.
Today was day three of judging. We finally got to the end of the 882 entries. With some pieces up to 45 minutes long it was pretty tough. A few case studies snuck into the pack today which was a shame. And every one of them claimed to generate over 5 billion media impressions. There was no mention of any sales but a load of buzz was created.
Herr Dr Vogel will calibrate the shortlist for us tmrw. I suspect it will be pretty short. There are some gems in there but also some dire stuff. I know some clients can make their agency produce shit work but surely they can’t make you enter it into an award show. But there have been some highlights. So I suspect we’ll be able to award a wee bit of metal. Hopefully some of the work from our part of the world will be amongst it.
