Sam Cable: Hamburg school diary #3
Sam Cable is a copywriting student at Miami Ad School Sydney, currently studying in Hamburg before graduating in December.
Breathe in the crisp autumn air.
The days are getting shorter like the sleeves of my woollen sweater after a cycle in the washing machine. Autumn has arrived in Hamburg. One of the most beautiful things about living in Europe is the generous variety of deciduous trees. Last week, the trees were painted shades of bright yellows, warm browns and rusty oranges. As the breeze builds over the Atlantic Ocean, the cold winds of the North Sea blow across coastal Germany. This breeze is the reason the leaves have covered the ground in magnificent warm shades, and also the reason I keep needing to buy thicker clothes. The autumnal leaves are certainly a change from seeing the purple Jacaranda flowers covering the streets back home now.
Although the weather is getting cooler, I am still cycling to class along the Alster Lake. This quarter we have been taught by three, very respected leaders in the advertising industry. Our first class is with Timm Weber, executive creative director at Publicis Pixelpark. Their office is on the fifth floor overlooking one of the colourful side streets in the Hamburg city centre. Throughout the quarter, the agency will provide client briefs as we attempt to crack them. The second class is led by Götz Ulmer, partner and ECO at Jung von Matt. Located in the super trendy, suburb of inner west Hamburg, the agency is known for their love of dogs. There is even a section on their website dedicated to them. Our last teacher is Lennert Schrader, director at Plexus Productions. He is helping us build a website so every student will graduate with a unique portfolio displaying our campaigns and passion projects.
It is only the third week, but this quarter has already been extremely productive. I have selected an idea for my website and commenced the process to build. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the quarter unfolds.
