Alina’s ability to create stunning cinematic visuals has seen her go on to win various awards include gold at the London Photographic Association Portraiture competition as well as a nomination for the Cannes Lions ‘Young Director Award’ for her directorial debut commercial ‘3 Fat Babushkas’.
Alina’s celebrity portraiture has captured the likes of Alicia Vikander, Michael Shannon, Ewan McGregor, Julia Stiles, Christine Lagarde, Frank Lowy and many more notable people. Previous clients include Grey New York, Clemenger BBDO, Havas, HBO, Stan, Sony Music and Warner Brothers to name a few.
Alina splits her time between Sydney and New York, where she recently launched her solo exhibitions ‘Light at the End of the Tunnel’ and ‘At Your Door: The Doormen of New York City‘. The latter is a large-scale photographic exhibition, which features life size portraits of New York Doormen and presents a rare view into the lives and faces of these notoriously private men, bound by the secrecy of their profession. Alina recently returned to New York to shoot a documentary on these men and is currently working on touring the exhibition globally. As an artist, Alina explores how important events in history can create a ripple effect across the globe resulting in major, often irreversible changes for humanity, the way we live, and the way we communicate.
Alina has also recently completed other projects including This Time Its Personal, Harlem and In Bloom.
Says Alina: “I AM RUSSIAN AND I CAN NOT KEEP CALM!
“People call me Smokey (long story) and I photograph because I can’t paint. I direct to tell stories. When I was 15, I came across a portrait of Sartre by Henri-Cartier Bresson and that’s how the obsession of capturing the human sprit started. Just like you, I’m obsessed with so many things, it impossible to narrow it down, right ?! … But if I had to pick, I’d say I definitely can’t live without European cinema, New York, my friends, Otto Dix, Smalls jazz bar in West Village, theatre, stilettos, BBC radio, Louis Kahn, the sound of French and Italian, Nina Simone (nothing better than her), Rachmaninov (genius), The Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac & Eminem (legends) and all other tunes I’m crazy about; then there is Kieslowski, Messerschmidt, Kundera and Richard Ford, Dostoevsky, The Dick Cavett show, Tarkovsky, Woody Allen, Malle, Scorsese and so much more! But above all I can’t live without my mum’s borsch! Mum Rules!”
