The event, “Connect IV” run by Queensland Youngbloods, an initiative of the Communications Council, will provide university students and industry professionals the opportunity to mingle at the network’s second event of the year.

VENUE: The Jubilee Hotel

470 St Pauls Terrace

Fortitude Valley, QLD 4006

WHEN: Thursday 5 June, 6pm

Queensland Youngbloods co-chair Anna Kelly said in today’s climate, breaking into a new industry was challenging.

Says Kelly: “As any professional who has spent hours, days, weeks, and even months applying for that first job after university would know, breaking into a new industry can be tough.

“The advertising, media, marketing, and communications industries can be especially difficult to break into – especially for Queenslanders.”

A job search on May 8, 2014 for “Advertising, Arts & Media” jobs in Sydney on seek.com.au revealed 520 jobs matching the search criteria.

Says Kelly: “The same job search for ‘Advertising, Arts & Media’ jobs in Brisbane revealed only 71 jobs matching the search criteria.

“Although Brisbane’s population is smaller, many, if not most of the 71 jobs are not suitable for graduates, proving it can be a hard industry to break into.

“In such a competitive environment, the old adage ‘it’s not what you know but who you know’ rings true, and with the fierce competition for graduates trying to find work, networking events can be crucial to landing a job.”

The networking event on June 5 at The Jubilee Hotel is the second event of the year held by Queensland Youngbloods.

The first, “Prescribing Your Career” sold out within days of tickets going on sale, with budding communications professionals keen for the very ingredient to boost their chances of obtaining their dream job.

Says Kelly: “Events held by Youngbloods provide valuable networking opportunities for young professionals to break into the advertising, media, marketing and communications industries.

“Our events are proving very worthwhile. At ‘Prescribing Your Career’, Eric Van Schaik won an internship with agency Junior Cru and is still contributing to the agency after his internship period has finished.”

Anyone under the age of 30, in their final year of studies, or new to the industry can become a member of Queensland Youngbloods.

Membership is free and includes industry news, educational events and social networking opportunities that Youngbloods run throughout each year.
